Culture night & Reykjavik Marathon

Reykjavik Culture Night (“Menningarnótt” in Icelandic) has become an essential part of cultural life in Iceland with over 100 thousand people (Note that Reykjavik´s population is ca. 120.000!) strolling down the city streets on this exciting and eventful night. Culture Night offers the chance to enjoy a variety of activities ranging from traditional shows and exhibitions to more unusual happenings.

A number of cultural institutes such as galleries, ateliers, shops, cafes, churches, restaurants and bars in downtown of Reykjavik stay open until late.

The popular Reykjavik Marathon takes place on the same day. The marathon has been annual since first arranged in 1984. Along with the full marathon, a half marathon and several races of shorter distances are arranged as well. Annually, over ten thousand participants compete in the various events with ca. 600-700 people competing in the full marathon.

In short:

If you find yourself in Reykjavík during culture night, soak yourself in it, you're guaranteed one of the best times to be had in Iceland, as it offers a great chance for experiencing arts, culture and other activities in a uniquely Icelandic way.
