The lake Lagarfjót (also called Lögurinn) is about 140 km. long flood or river of glacier water. Its surface is measuring 53 km2 and its greatest width is 2.5km and depth is 112m (most 90m under sea level).

Like in the Scottish lake Loch Ness, a worm/monster called Lagarfljótsormurinn by the locals lives in the depths of the lake. It was first mentioned in 1345 and it was considered a bad omen if this monster was seen peeking out of the water. For the last years it has not been seen so often, but you can never know…

A river boat bearing the same name as the worm sails on the lake and river.
