Tjörnin (The Pond) is situated in the heart of the capital city Reykjavík. One of the best known lakes in Iceland.
Under the street of Lækjargata the water of the lake runs and into the harbour. The steam was open in the old times but now a day’s it’s covered by Lækjargata.
Tjörnin harbors varied birdlife and many arctic bird species, swans, geese and ducks nest there. This makes the pond a beautiful and a special spot for families to go to. During the winter, hot geothermal waters are pumped into a small area of the pond to defrost a small part for the water birds.
In the winter time the pond freezes over and people go skating and play ice-hockey...
