Esjan is a 914 m. high mountain just outside the capital city Reykjavík. It is not a single mountain but in a volcanic mountain range made from tuff stone and basalt.

It is thought that Esjan was built up in the beginning of the Ice Age. The eastern part is the youngest, around 1.8 million years and the west part of the mountain range is around 3.2 million years old.

The mountain is only a 15 minutes drive from the capital Reykjavík and a popular place to hike.
