Hafnarfjörður is the third populous municipal in Iceland, after Kópavogur and Reykjavík. It is one of the oldest towns in the country, it became a thriving town due to its excellent natural harbour and takes it name from the area’s harbours. Hafnaförður means “Harbour Fjord”. Hafnarfjörður attained official municipal status in 1908.
Danish monarchy established a Danish trade monopoly in Iceland which lasted until the 18th century, during this period, Hafnarfjörður was the nation’s busiest trade centre.
Today Hafnarfjörður is one of the nation’s largest fishing centres, and the site of Iceland’s first wholesaler’s auction market. Fishing, industry, commerce and service have been the town’s main activities.
