Mosfellsbær is a rapidly growing town in the Greater Reykjavík Area. Mosfellsbær got its name “Town of Mosfell” in 1987, when it got its municipal charter.
The town is bordered by the ocean in Leiruvogur and three rivers run through it to the sea, Leirvogsá, Kaldakvísl and Varmá.
The pride and joy of Mosfellsbær (Icelanders) is without a doubt the Nobel Prize winner Halldór Kiljan Laxness, he was born and raced in Mosfellsbær. He was an incredibly prolific writer, he wrote ofer 62 books over a 68 year period. Well over 500 editions of his works have been published and have been translated into over 43 languages. Halldór Laxness and his literature are an important part of Iceland’s culture.
