The southernmost village in Iceland is Vík in Mýrdalur. The village is located on the main ring road of Iceland. Even though it is small it is the largest seaside settlement in that area and is an important staging post.
Vík does not have a harbour due to the natural circumstances. Nevertheless Vík’s inhabitants go fishing with the help of their amphibious boats, which enables them to drive literally out to sea.
Vík has the highest precipitation in Iceland which means that there is a lot of rain, snow, wind, sleet, hail and fog. Vík is thought to be the wettest village in Iceland.
Few other places in Iceland offer as many contrasts of nature as Vík and the area is spectacular. Nearby is the beautiful black beach with Reynisdrangar rising majestically out of the Atlantic Ocean, which are black basalt-lava columns sculpted by the sea. The story is that they are former trolls which were caught outside at dawn – trolls could not see the sunlight, then they would turn into stone.
