Jón Sigurðsson is a national hero in Iceland, he’s always referred to as “president”. He was born at Hrafnseyri (Arnarfjörður) and his birthplace has been turned into a museum and has become a popular attraction for visitors. The Museum is dedicated to Sigurdsson’s memory it’s a remake of his childhood home and the old Hrafnseyri church still stands there.
Icelanders celebrate “The National day of Iceland” on Sigurðsson’s birthday, the same day as the Republic of Iceland was founded, on 17th of June 1944
