Update about the new Volcanic eruption and Volcano Tours
A volcanic eruption started under the Eyjafjalla glacier last night. All Volcano tours have been cancelled and are likely to be disrupted for at least the next couple of days. The eruption now is much more powerful than the one that started in Fimmvörðuháls last month. The fissure is around two kilometers long.
Due to these circumstances, all scheduled volcano tours have been cancelled today. Tours scheduled for departure this week are likely to be disrupted and the situation is reviewed as each morning goes by.
Iceland Travel is working on updating clients and customers about the situation and make necessary adjustments, as well as notifying all tour operators and travel agents about the situation.
Massive flooding has started down Markarfljótsaura and down the heaths above the farm Thorvaldseyri under Eyjafjöll-mountains. Roads and bridges are considered to be in danger because of the flooding, among them the new bridge over Markarfljót-river. An attempt has been made to breach route one to try and save bridges in the area.
Around seven hundred inhabitants in Fljótshlíð, Landeyjum and under the Eyjafjöll-mountains had to evacuate their homes last night due to the eruption.
No air traffic is allowed in a large area above and around the eruption site. As a result there are no flights to Egilsstaðir or Hornafjörður.
