Day 1 – Arrival
Overnight stay in Reykjavík (transfer from Keflavík airport not included).
Day 2 – Reykjavík – Þingvellir – Gullfoss – Geysir – Hekla
We begin with a visit to Þingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world’s first parliament and a jewel of nature. Next we travel to the nearby geothermal area of the great Geysir and witness several boiling mud pools and hot springs. The most active geyser, Strokkur, shoots water high into the air every few minutes. Onwards to the beautiful Gullfoss of “Golden” falls considered by many to be the most impressive in Iceland. Visit Friðheimar Farm for a show of the Icelandic horse and an insight into geothermal greenhouse cultivation. Dinner and overnight in near Mount Hekla.
Day 3 – Hekla – Landmannalaugar – Hekla
Follow a interior track to Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains with the option of bathing in a naturally warm geothermal pool. This pearl of the interior consists of deep valleys and mountains, formed in volcanic eruptions under the icecap during the ice-age, moulding this uniquely colourful landscape. Dinner and overnight in near Mount Hekla.
Day 4 – Hekla – Þórsmörk – Skógar – Vík
Spend most of this day exploring the Þórsmörk area, a beautiful nature reserve situated between three glaciers. One of them, the towering strata volcano Eyjafjallajökull, is probably the most famous volcano in the world today. In Þórsmörk there are many hiking trails through valleys with birch trees, glacial rivers, streams and wonderful mountain scenery. Passing through rough mountain tracks and crossing un-bridged glacial rivers adds to the delight and excitement of this spectacular area. Continue from Þórsmörk and admire the two beautiful waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, on the way. Stop to visit the Folk Museum at Skógar and later enjoy the great views on Dyrhólaey headland. Dinner and overnight in Vík area.
Day 5 – Vík – Laki – Kirkjubæjarklaustur
A full day to the area of Laki volcanic craters, famous for the eruption in 1783, the largest eruptions since the settlement of Iceland. The crater row is 25 km long, and show spectacular formations of red and black scoria and lava. During the eruption a massive lava flow formed the spectacular Eldhraun lava field, which is the third largest on Earth since the last ice age. Dinner and overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.
Day 6 – Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Skaftafell – Jökulsárlón – Höfn
Start the day by visiting Skaftafell National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, dominated by Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon. Enjoy a boat tour on the Lagoon, sailing among the majestic icebergs. Finally, take pleasure in a snowmobile tour on Vatnajökull glacier before driving on to the village of Höfn. Dinner and overnight in Höfn area.
Day 7 – Höfn – East Fjords (Öxi) – Egilsstaðir – Dettifoss – Ásbyrgi - Húsavík
Drive from Höfn through the towering mountains plunging vertically into the sea that form the magnificent East Fjords. Drive over Öxi mountain road to Egilsstaðir village. From there drive to Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe, located in the majestic Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Discover the enormous horseshoe-shaped canyon of Ásbyrgi National Park that according to Norse mythology, is the hoof-print left by Sleipnir, the magical eight-legged horse of the pagan god Óðinn. Then travel around the stunning Tjörnes Peninsula to Húsavík village. Evening or late afternoon whale watching tour from Húsavík village. Dinner and overnight in Húsavík area.
Day 8 – Húsavík – Askja – Mývatn
Day tour to Askja, a huge caldera that is still in the making. Askja is the deepest lake in Iceland and was formed as a result of series of volcanic eruptions in 1874-1875. An easy walk leads you to the explosion crater Víti (Hell). After enjoying the beautiful and bizarre landscape return back to Lake Mývatn. A stop is made at the Herðubreiðarlindir oasis where clear pure water flows from springs in an old lava flow. The springs sustain beautiful flora and small ponds, providing environment for blossoming vegetation and birdlife in the otherwise inhospitable volcanic landscape. Dinner and overnight in the Mývatn area.
Day 9 – Mývatn – Akureyri
Start the day with a tour of the Lake Mývatn area. Visit Námaskarð pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colours. Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Mývatn area, including the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, and the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir. Enjoy a refreshing visit to the Nature Baths. One of Mývatn area’s claims to fame is that it is home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse birdlife in general. Afterwards drive towards Goðafoss waterfall before continuing to Akureyri, the vibrant “Capital of the North” and the second largest urban area in Iceland. Spend time in Akureyri, which can include a visit to the beautiful botanical gardens. Dinner and overnight in Akureyri area.
Day 10 – Akureyri – Skagafjörður – Snæfellsnes Peninsula (Grundarfjörður)
Majestic mountains and narrow passes lead to Skagafjörður which is known for the breeding of the unique Icelandic horse. Visit the Glaumbær Folk Museum is included. Towards the village of Blönduós built on both sides of the river Blanda with Hrútey Island a protected nature reserve located in this popular salmon river. The journey continues through rolling farmlands and across Laxárdalsheiði heath to Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Visit Bjarnarhöfn shark curing farm/museum, listen to the remarkable history of the region and taste traditional Icelandic specialties, such as dried fish and traditional cured shark. Dinner and overnight in Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Day 11 – Snæfellsnes Peninsula – Borgarnes – Reykjavík
Morning drive to Snæfellsnes National Park. Circumvent the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier, where, according to Jules Verne, the entrance to the centre of the Earth can be found. Continue to the beautiful rocky sea shore by Djúpalónssandur. Stop at the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi with its magnificent columnar basalt rock formations. Take a unique walk along the seaside before driving to Borgarnes to visit the Settlement Centre for a look into the Viking culture. Overnight in Reykjavík.
