This Self Drive tour in Iceland focuses on the beautiful South Coast and re-traces the footsteps of the Viking Sagas while visiting many striking waterfalls, magnificent geysers and infamous glaciers and volcanoes along the way.

Even though the tour is relatively short (5 days) you cover all the major attractions in South West Iceland, including Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area, as well as Borgarfjordur area.

With an easy upgrade of your car to a 4wd, you can travel through the highland track of Kaldidalur, a mountain pass between two glaciers in the south.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Explore Reykjavik, the northernmost capital in the world.

DAY 2: SOUTH COAST

Thundering Waterfalls - Cliffs & Stone Arches - Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore - Puffin Colony

Approximate mileage: ca. 190 km / 118 miles

Visit the highlights of the South Coast such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the infamous Eyjafjallajokull glacier and surrounding area (where the eruption in 2010 took place) and Dyrholaey*, a rocky headland where thousands of sea birds and puffins nest during the summer.

*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season in the spring, from ca. middle May until June 23rd

DAY 3: Thjorsardalur Valley

Colorful Valley - Hekla Volcano - The Famous Golden Falls - Exploding Geysers

Approximate mileage: ca. 300 km / 186 miles

Explore Thjorsardalur valley and its landscape of sharply contrasting birch woods, sandy lava fields, rivers and waterfalls, huddling below the impressive volcano Hekla. Continue to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area.

Optional: Thjodveldisbaerinn - a replica of an old Viking farm, River rafting in the Geysir area, ATV-quad biking in Haukadalur.

DAY 4: Thingvellir - Borgarfjordur area

National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO) - Picturesque Fjords - Waterfalls

Approximate mileage: ca. 300 km / 186 miles

Visit Thingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Icelandic parliament and a jewel of nature. Then via Hvalfjordur fjord or Kaldidalur highland track (4WD needed), your journey continues to the beautiful Borgarfjordur region and Reykholt, home of the 13th century scholar Snorri Sturluson. Return to Reykjavík in the afternoon.

DAY 5: DEPARTURE
