Hvalsneskirkja Church

Hvalsneskirkja Church in Sandgerdi is a treat for archeology and photography buffs alike, with a beautifully preserved church and adjacent graveyard dating back to 1887. The lovely structure is completely built from carved stone collected from the region and the interior made from driftwood collected from the nearby shoreline.

An item of unique interest is the seventeenth-century gravestone of Steinunn Hallgrimsdottir who died in 1649. The only daughter of Iceland’s favorite poet, Hallgrimur Petursson, her gravestone was lost until it was discovered in 1964 while building the church’s stone walkway.
