The Imagine Peace Tower located on Videy Island off the coast of Reykjavik is an outdoor art piece by Yoko Ono dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. The wishing well monument which symbolizes peace and joy, emits a shining beam of light into the sky and features peace prayers in 24 languages.
Unveiled in 2007, the Imagine Peace Tower is lit each year from October 9th (John’s birthday) until December 8th (the anniversary of his death). It is also lit on February 8th for Yoko’s birthday, in mid-March to celebrate John and Yoko’s wedding and the arrival of spring, during the Winter Solstice and on New Year’s Eve.
The blue light beam is visible from virtually any point in the city and if you’d like a closer look, take a short ferry ride from the pier at Skarfabakki or the old harbor downtown. On select dates in the fall, Videyjarstofa restaurant on the island offers a John Lennon tribute concert and dinner.
Yoko Ono chose Iceland as the location for this amazing tribute to John Lennon and beacon to world peace because according to her, “Iceland is a magical and beautiful country. The electrical energy source for the country and for the Imagine Peace Tower is geothermal – water, instead of oil. No pollution. No war. This is just one of the incredible situations that creates the magic of Iceland.”
