Vopnafjordur

Vopnafjordur is a small and beautiful village on a spit at the eastern part of Kolbeinsskagi. Vopnafjordur is situated on a bay with the same name “Vopnafjordur”.

It has its roots as a trading centre, from times long past and at the end of the 19th century the village started forming. To this day the main industry in Vopnafjordur is fish and the processing of it, there is a highly technical fish processing factory in the village.

Things to do in Vopnafjordur

Vopnafjordur boasts two of the best known salmon rivers in Iceland, and has attracted people like Prince Charles and George Bush Sr. for that reason.

But salmon fishing isn't the only thing Vopnafjordur has to offer. As with so many other places in Iceland, hiking is a popular pastime, as well as horse riding and mountain biking.

Those who are more into a relaxed afternoon have the opportunity to go sea angling, golfing, birdwatching or simply chill out at the local geothermal pool.
