Hvalfjordur Fjord

Hvalfjordur Fjord (Whale Fjord) is surprisingly not named for the number of whales spotted in the area, but rather for an ancient folktale involving an angry, red-hatted whale that terrorized Iceland’s west coast until it was lured into a trap.

Exploring the coastline here is a beautiful alternative to taking the Hvalfjardargong tunnel between Reykjavik and Borgarnes and reveals a wonderful mixture of nature’s contrasts and surprises.
