Glanni waterfall is hidden away from the main road and is said by the locals to be the dwelling place of elves and trolls. The trail is marked and well defined passing through some low lying shrubs.
Glanni is situated close to Grabrokarhraun lava field and the small village of Bifrost. Nearby is the Paradise Hollow, a beautiful oasis in the middle of a lava field. Park your car by the golf course and from there is a walking path that will lead to the waterfall and the hollow. The viewing deck offers a great view of Glanni. You can buy provisions at the coffee shop by the car park and enjoy a wonderful picnic by the waterfall or in Paradise Hollow.
The waterfall is small but beautiful with at least three side-by-side drops, that each has multiple tiers. The word Glanni means light or shining and the waterfall Glanni is so named because of the bright white colour of the water as it hits the rocks below. The river itself, Norðurá River, is one of Iceland’s most generous salmon fishing rivers, and therefore, it’s not uncommon to see salmon jumping up Glanni waterfall, via man made steps to make their journey easier.
