Flateyri has been a trading post in the Westfjords since 1792, although its importance as such has decreased over the years. First and foremost, the village was a base for whale and shark operations. The vast majority of the population in town work in the field of fishing.

Flateyri offers travellers the opportunity to experience the quit fishing village life and environment, and learn the history of fishing activities in the towns museums. Flateyri is also the perfect base for hiking trips to the mountains and fjords surrounding the village.
