Beautifully situated on the northern side of the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Stykkisholmur is the largest town and commercial center for the area. It also serves as the gateway to the Westfjords, with regular ferry service including stopovers at the timeless island of Flatey.

The conservation of cultural heritage in Stykkisholmur can be seen in the collection of well-preserved houses in the town center. They include the local folk museum. It is housed in a beautifully restored timber house dating from 1828.
