Whale-watching tours aren’t the only way to learn about Iceland’s wondrous wildlife. Whales of Iceland is a large museum close to the harbour that is dedicated to educating and entertaining guests about Iceland’s gentle giants. The museum is, in fact, home to 23 life-size models of different whale species found off the coasts of Iceland. Models include minke, fin, sperm, blue and humpback whales.
Each whale model features personal markings and characteristics of an actual whale found off the coast of Iceland. The models are surprisingly soft, fun to touch and perfect for taking selfies. The atmosphere throughout the museum mimics an underwater adventure. Guests can hear soft, soothing whale sounds amid ambient lighting.
<h2>Ocean conservation is key</h2>
Whales of Iceland also has a conservation exhibit developed in cooperation with local whale scientists and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. The exhibition focuses on five significant threats that whales face and what each of us can do to help. Moreover, the museum screens the award-winning documentary Sonic Sea four times a day. The film focuses on the effects of noise pollution on whales and other marine life.
Education, however, is one of the museum’s core values, and its informative audio guide is available in a dozen languages, including English. Indeed, an international group of marine biologists and expert tour guides narrate the Whales of Iceland audio guides.
Meanwhile, the museum offers a free app for those that would like to know more about the different whale species on display. There&#8217;s information on the whales, including their biology, social behavior, and other fun facts. Visitors are encouraged to download the app from the App Store or Google Play and enjoy it onsite as a companion guide.
After exploring the exhibits, the Big Little Whale Café serves coffee, and snacks guests can enjoy underneath suspended whale models.
