Day 1

An Iceland Travel guide will meet you at the airport and bring you out to where the tour vehicle is waiting. Head over the lunar landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula as you drive to Reykjavík. Your guide will give you an introduction to your tour as you travel to your hotel.
Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price. Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).
Dinner is on your own tonight. Reykjavík’s tempting variety of restaurants and cuisines will make the dining experience a delight. (We can also add dinner on this night for your group, if requested.)

Welcome to the Land of Fire and Ice!

Day 2

Enjoy a delicious and healthy Icelandic breakfast buffet at your hotel. Meet your tour guide and driver to start your photography adventure!
Today you’ll be discovering the delightfully strange landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula, designated a UNESCO Geopark in 2015. The Reykjanes Peninsula is geologically one of the youngest areas of Iceland. The Mid-Atlantic ridge, where the European and North American tectonic plates meet, is visible here. It has created a photographer’s dream of bizarre landscapes, and it’s a great place to learn about how our planet was formed. You will find open fissures, normal faults, high-temperature geothermal fields and lava fields there.
You’ll start by heading towards Krýsuvík, a colourful hot spring area with bubbling mud pots and steam vents, making your first stop at the picturesque Lækjavellir riverbend.
Your group continues to Sogin, a landscape with brilliant colours caused by the high temperature alteration of the bedrock. The surreal landscape is pocketed with many steam vents, small hot water springs and bubbling mud pools. Your group will also stop at the Djúpavatn crater lake and explore the fantastical lava fields of the area.
Finally, you will reach the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most popular attractions. The beautiful azure water is unlike anything you have seen. It is a stark contrast to the surrounding black lava fields and grey moss. The water’s milky blue shade is due to its high silica content. The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37-39°C (99-102°F). Enjoy a relaxing swim in the soothing waters of the lagoon, where you’ll also have the chance to try the Lagoon’s famous skin softening white mud. Your visit includes towel rental, a Silica mud mask, and your choice of a drink at the Blue Lagoon’s bar.
After a refreshing Blue Lagoon visit, your group will take the scenic South Coast Road. This road leads along a dramatic coastline where thundering waves crash against black stone and sand. You’ll get a glimpse of the picturesque Strandakirkja church that holds a special place in the heart of local fishermen and their families. Your road then leads to the charming village of Hveragerði, known for its geothermal greenhouses where residents cultivate flowers and vegetables year-round. This has been a traditional holiday destination for Icelandic artists, and it is a lovely place for your group to spend the night.

The Surreal Reykjanes Peninsula & The Blue Lagoon

Day 3

Breakfast at your hotel. Today you will spend the day shooting pictures of natural wonders in the world-famous Golden Circle area. This fertile area is also full of farms, and in between Golden Circle sites you will stop at various locations to photograph Icelandic animals like sheep, cows, and horses. These animals are heirloom breeds that have not changed since Viking times, so they are unique (and very charming) subjects for photos
Þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is the cultural heart of Iceland with historic sites scattered throughout the park, and the landscape is captivating. Þingvellir is located where the North American and European tectonic plates meet above ground. You will see the walls that mark the edges of the continents, the lava fields that fill the area, and many ravines filled with crystal clear spring water. Þingvallavatn, the largest lake in Iceland, also makes a beautiful photo subject with its surrounding mountains.
The Geysir geothermal area has many fumaroles, hot springs, and mud pots. Geysir, the largest hot spring, gave its name to both the area and the English word “geyser.” Geysir is now inactive, but the area’s Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes with a plume up to twenty metres (65 feet).
Gullfoss, the powerful Golden Waterfall, thunders in two cascades into an ancient canyon. There are several platforms where you can have different views of the waterfall for your photos.
From Gullfoss waterfall your group will drive further on to Brúarhlöð where you can see beautiful rock formations in the canyon where the Hvítá river rushes. Then head through scenic farmlands in South Iceland to your accommodation.

The Golden Circle

Day 4

Breakfast at your hotel. Today your group will venture into the uninhabited highland interior, Iceland’s wild heart. Þórsmörk nature reserve is nestled between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull.
Þórsmörk is a favourite location for Icelandic photographers, and we think your group will agree. Lush woodland areas and roaring glacier rivers cut through black desert expanses, creating a landscape of dramatic contrasts. You won’t see any other place like this in Iceland &#8211; or the entire world! Parts of the valley are rich with moss, ferns and birchwood, while jagged mountain ridges and ice-capped peaks crown the horizon.
On the way to Þórsmörk, your group will stop to photograph the giant rocks by Steinholtsá River. They came from a landslide created by the overhanging glacier in 1967.
Hike into Stakkholtsgjá, a canyon surrounded by palagonite cliffs stretching 100 meters (328 feet) high. The hike to the end of the canyon provides an amazing reward: views of a beautiful waterfall. The trail is unpaved, but the hike is not difficult.
After the canyon visit, you will drive on rugged mountain rounds into the magical, vast Icelandic highlands. You’ll be heading to Þórsmörk’s Básar valley, stopping to take photos of the fantastical Elf Church and other beautiful rock formations on the way. The route will take you across some unbridged rivers, which your driver skilfully navigates. The Básar area is a great place for your group to enjoy a packed lunch in gorgeous natural surroundings.
After some time to enjoy Þórsmörk’s magnificence, your group will head to the famous South Shore region. Stop to take photos at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is approximately 60 metres (197 feet) high. The most dramatic view for a photograph is from the path that leads behind the cascade and allows you to circle around the plume of water plunging down from above.
On the way to scenic Vík village, you’ll visit one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls, Skógafoss. Skógafoss is a beautifully shaped waterfall that drops 62 metres (102 feet). You can take footpaths leading right up to Skógafoss and, if the sun is shining, you might glimpse the rainbow arcing over the waterfall. If you’re up for some exercise, you can climb the nearby staircase to get a wonderful panorama view of the area around the waterfall.
Note: The trails and staircases around Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls may be closed during winter months for safety reasons.

Þórsmörk Nature Reserve

Day 5

Breakfast at your hotel. Today your group continues on the famous Ring Road along the south coast. Your destination is the southern part of Vatnajökull National Park. This park covers 14% of Iceland’s land area, and it is the largest national park in Western Europe. You can expect an excellent range of photographic subjects: this fire and ice landscape includes vast lava flows, glacier tongues and black sands threaded with glacial rivers.
Your first stop will be at Fjaðrárgljúfur, a stunning and magical canyon about 100 metres (328 feet) high and 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) long. The canyon is narrow and serpentine-shaped with tumbling waterfalls. The small and scenic Fjaðrá River runs through the canyon.
Your group will continue to Jökulsárlón (The Glacier Lagoon), a beautiful place where blue icebergs break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue. The icebergs slowly float across the lake towards the ocean. Each iceberg is unique and makes for fascinating photography. You might even catch some photos of seals and birds like Arctic skua and Arctic terns around the lagoon.
The Diamond Beach is a black-sand beach by Jökulsárlón, where icebergs wash ashore after finally reaching the ocean. Small and large icebergs glitter like jewels on the black-sand beach. The Diamond Beach became internationally known thanks to social media posts. It is a striking place that never looks the same, so it’s definitely a great photography subject.

River Canyon and Glacier Lagoon

Day 6

Breakfast at your hotel. Your group will explore more of the area around Vatnajökull National Park, enjoying some unforgettable photo opportunities. If you visit between mid-May and mid-August, you’ll be in a great place for catching images of seabirds.
Start your day with a visit to Cape Ingólfshöfði, a nature reserve and home to thousands of nesting seabirds, including puffins and great skuas. This is an area seldom visited by photographers, a truly unique place for nature photography.
We can arrange one of two guided bird experiences in the area*:
-Mid-May through Mid-August: A guided birdwatching tour with a focus on viewing puffins. Your group will travel in a tractor-drawn hay wagon to the beach and take a guided walk of the area. The walk includes interesting facts on the area’s geology and history.
-Early-June through Mid-August: An early morning guided photography-themed tour. This is a good time of the day for viewing birds. Your group will travel in a tractor-drawn hay wagon to the beach and take a guided walk with good stops to set up and take photos. The focus is on photography opportunities rather than information on the area.
Afterwards, you will visit the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park. Skaftafell is known as a hiker’s paradise, and it also is a paradise for photographers. You’ll find you are in a true fire and ice area where glacier-capped volcanoes encircle a region of lava landscapes. You’ll discover a wonderland of lagoons, waterfalls, forests, rivers, and volcanic deserts. If you’re visiting during the summertime, your group will hike to the striking Svartifoss, a waterfall surrounded by black basalt columns.
Another great walk today is a visit to the Skaftafellsjökull glacier tongue. Over the centuries Skaftafellsjökull has been slowly creeping down from the mighty Vatnajökull glacier. At the end of the glacier tongue is a lagoon, sometimes even with a few floating icebergs.
On the way back to Vík for the night, your group might like the opportunity to stop for photos in the vast Eldhraun lava fields where thick grey moss covers the lava as far as you can see. Eldhraun was formed in one massive lava flow in the 18th century, making it the world’s largest recorded single flow of lava.

*The Ingolfhöfði Bird Themed Photo visit is only available mid-May through mid-August. During the other months of the year your group will instead have extra time to enjoy the beautiful and photogenic vistas of Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park.

Day 7

Breakfast at your hotel. Vík is close to one of Iceland’s most dramatic black sand beaches. Your day starts with a drive to Reynisfjara beach, where tall basalt columnar cliffs meet the waves of the North Atlantic Ocean. Far out to sea are dramatic pillars of lava; the Reynisdrangar. It’s not hard to imagine that these could be frozen trolls (at least according to Icelandic folklore).
Your next stop is Sólheimajökull, a glacial tongue stretching out from the mighty Myrdalsjökull ice cap. Take an easy walk up to the glacier tongue where you can photograph it. The light and the shapes of the ice create a palette of beautiful colours in the glacier, blended with a dusting of black volcanic sand.
The Ring Road leads you back to Reykjavík for a small tour of the city. You’ll see the picturesque Grótta lighthouse, Hallgrimskirkja church and Harpa concert hall. End your tour with a walk around the historic city centre. Your guide will say farewell to your group before your group checks into your hotel.

Reynisfjara Beach – Sólheimajökull Glacier – Reykjavík

Day 8

Breakfast at your hotel. (Please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight). Depending on your schedule there may be free time to explore Reykjavik, take a refreshing morning walk and do some shopping.
Meet your bus driver at your hotel for an unguided transfer to Keflavík Airport and your return flight. You’ll have the chance to take in some final views of Iceland as you drive along the Reykjanes Peninsula to the airport. Enjoy your trip back to your home country and the fond memories of your time in Iceland!
