**Please note that the package price is based on 9 x 24-hour rental days starting at the time of rental. If your flight arrives early on day 1 and departs late on your last day, an additional supplement will be necessary unless you choose to return the car in Reykjavik when the included day rental is up and use our FlyBus departure transfer.

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland

Approximate distance: ca25km / 16miles

Pick up your rental car at Keflavik International airport and explore Reykjanes peninsula or head to the Blue Lagoon for a relaxing soak (the Blue Lagoon must be reserved in advance; we are happy to help you with booking an entrance time). 

Recently recognized by UNESCO as an internationally significant Geopark, Reykjanes Peninsula has over 50 interesting geological features that you can explore.  Those who enjoy history might want to visit the Viking World exhibit, which includes the famous Islendingur Viking longboat replica that sailed between Iceland and North America in the year 2000.

Day 2: Reykjavik – Thingvellir –Hvanneyri

Approximate distance: ca426km / 265miles

National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO) – Lava Waterfalls – Europe´s Most Powerful Hotsprings

Breakfast at your hotel.  Start today’s journey with a visit to the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, the spot where the world's oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake.  You can also see where the North American and European tectonic plates divide. 

Continue to Borgarfjordur fjord, a favourite nature getaway location for Icelanders.  Unique areas to explore along the way include Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the world, and Hraunfossar (The Lava Waterfalls), which are sure to leave an impression.

Day 3: Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Borgarfjordur

Approximate distance: ca355km / 230miles

Mystical Volcanic Crater – Seabird cliffs – Pebbled Beach – Glacial Mountain

Today visit the colourful and geologically diverse Snaefellsnes Peninsula, home to beautiful Snaefellsjokull National Park.  Breakfast at your hotel.  Circle around the legendary Snæfellsjokull glacier, mentioned in Jules Verne’s famous science fiction novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth.  Drive to the unique pebbled Djupalonssandur beach. Stop at the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi with its magnificent columnar basalt rock formations and crashing waves.

Day 4: Borgarfjordur- Vatnsnes – Blonduos

Approximate distance: ca235km / 146miles

Hauntingly beautiful peninsula – Viking fortress – Grettir‘s Saga history

Breakfast at your hotel.  Spend the day exploring the  north-west part of Iceland.  Visit Vatnsnes peninsula, recently made famous in Hannah Kent‘s heart-wrenching historical novel, Burial Rites.  This remote area is where the sky seems to meet the sea.  This is the perfect place for spotting seals and viewing the remarkably-shaped Hvitserkur crag.  Another interesting sight is Borgarvirki,  a columnar basalt fortress used in Viking-age battles.

Day 5: Akureyri - Godafoss – Myvatn – Husavik

Approximate distance: ca300km / 186miles

Capital of the North Iceland – Waterfall “Of the Gods” – Bizarre Lava Formation – Geothermal & Volcanic Activity

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today you will travel in the Lake Myvatn region. Along the way, stop in Akureyri, the vibrant “Capital of the North” and at the awe-inspiring Godafoss waterfall.  Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. It also has some of Iceland’s best examples of volcanic features, making it popular with geology buffs.  Here you can explore pseudo craters at Skutustadir, peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the vast Hverfjall Crater, and the hissing solfataras in the Hverarond geothermal region.  Over the region looms Krafla, the volcano who helped shape Myvatn.  A popular relaxing activity today might be to have a swim in the Myvatn Nature Baths, an aqua blue lagoon set amid the lava wilderness.

Day 6: Myvatn – Dettifoss – Reydarfjordur

Approximate distance: ca360km / 224miles

Highland Desert - Europe's Most Powerful Waterfall – Legendary Lake Monster

Breakfast at your hotel.  Cross the arid vastness of the highland desert plateau Modrudalsoræfi as you head to East Fjords, stopping along the way at Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Explore Egilsstadir and surrounding area, one of the oldest regions in Iceland, shaped by glaciers during the Ice Age. Although many of the fjords are uninhabited, each fjord has its own grandeur. The natural harbours in the fjords led to the development of fishing villages that due to their remoteness have maintained a degree of old-world charm.

Day 7: Reydarfjordur – Hofn

Approximate distance: ca230km / 143miles

Narrow Fjords - Steep Mountains - Picturesque Coastline

Breakfast at your hotel.  Continue crossing the  East Fjords region, enjoying views of mountains plunging vertically into the sea.  Cross the Breiddalsheidi/Oxi plateau, which is often enveloped in a mystical fog. Drive onwards to Höfn village through the Almannaskard pass; don’t forget to stop and admire the majestic coastline along the way.

Day 8: Hofn – Klaustur - Vik – Hella

Approximate distance: ca365km / 227miles

Europe's Largest Glacier - Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs- Europe's Largest National Park

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today continue in the shadow of Vatnajokull glacier towards the national park that bears its name.  Vatnajokull National Park is the largest park in Western Europe.  In the area of the park, visit the beautiful glacier-ringed Skaftafell region and the world-famous Glacial Lagoon.  Cross Skeidararsandur, the largest glacial outwash in Iceland. Watch the dramatic scenery of black sand plains and lava fields go by as you head to Dyrholaey*, a solitary cliff teeming with bird life, including puffins (the best time to see puffins is mid-May – mid- August).  Visit Skogafoss, a beautiful waterfall said to hide medieval treasure before heading to your overnight in South Iceland.

*Dyrholaey is closed during the bird nesting season: mid-May through late June.  

 
 

Day 9: Gullfoss – Geysir - Reykjavik

Approximate distance: ca210km / 130miles

Golden Waterfall - Exploding Geysers – Capital City

Breakfast at your hotel.  Enjoy great photo opportunities in the world-famous spouting hot spring area of Geysir. You only need to wait a few minutes for Strokkur geyser to erupt and send a magnificent plume of water and steam column high into the air. Continue on to the magnificent Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall.”  The day ends back in Reykjavik in the late afternoon.

Day 10: Departure

Approximate distance: ca52km / 32miles

Breakfast at your hotel.  Drive back to Keflavik International Airport and drop off rental car.  We recommend departing Reykjavík no later than three hours before your flight.

By selecting a budget self-drive holiday you'll lower your costs considerably as you'll be staying in accommodation with shared facilities.
These are a combination of basic hotels, farmhouses and guesthouses. All rooms have made-up beds and some rooms have washbasins. Showers and WC are shared facilities. The first night in all budget self-drives with Iceland Travel include a accommodation with private facilities in the town of Hveragerdi.

Superior self-drive holiday

Upgrade your comfort car rental holiday to the best possible accommodation with premium amenities, either for the full duration of your stay or only selected nights. The upgrade can either be to a superior room in a comfort hotel, or a standard room in an upscale hotel.
The cost for a superior upgrade is 84 EUR per room per night (on prices in comfort category).

Late Arrival Supplement

Late Arrival Supplement for passengers arriving late evening/night. Stay at Airport Hotel Smari at Keflavik International Airport for your pre night instead of Hveragerdi Area. Supplement per room per night is 48 EUR in Category Comfort and 63 EUR on prices in Economy and Budget.
