An impressive Northern Lights experience in the realm of Vatnajokull, Europe's largest glacier

Experience an unforgettable winter adventure in the region surrounding Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier. Nestled below the mighty glacier is the charming fishing village of Hofn, an ideal base for exploring this incredible region. You can request wake-up alerts from the hotel and view dancing northern lights in the middle of the night, one of the most spectacular and beautiful natural phenomena. Don’t forget to sample fresh langoustine (lobster) caught from the surrounding North Atlantic Ocean, a speciality in the local restaurants.

Day 1: : Hornafjordur and Europe’s Largest Glacier

When you arrive in Hofn, pick up your car from the airport car rental and drive to Hofn  village. Once you have checked in to your hotel, you can take a scenic walk on your own through the village and down to the Harbor, where you might see fishermen land their catch of the day.  It‘s also possible book locally-guided walking tours that show you the wildlife and culture in the town or even to arrange  meeting a local family and having a home-cooked dinner at their home.

You might also consider booking optional guided tours for northern lights hunting.

Day 2: Glacier Experience

Explore Hofn and surroundings

Hofn's proximity to Vatnajokull Glacier provides great opportunity to experience glacial wonders in the region. We recommend taking an optional tour to Jokulsarlon, the Glacier Lagoon, where you might see seals swimming between the huge floating icebergs. Other opportunities might include glacier walking in Skaftafell, a glacier-ringed nature preserve in Vatnajokull National Park and  visiting the Thorbergur Cultural Centre near the Glacial Lagoon, honouring a favourite Icelandic author.  The Thorbergur Centre is also known for its excellent restaurant specialising in regional cuisine (reservations are necessary)

In the evening check out optional guided tours hunting the northern lights.

Day 4: Farewell to Hornafjörður

Breakfast at your hotel.  Enjoy some time in Höfn before dropping off your car at the Hofn airport.

By selecting a budget self-drive holiday you'll lower your costs considerably as you'll be staying in accommodation with shared facilities.
These are a combination of basic hotels, farmhouses and guesthouses. All rooms have made-up beds and some rooms have washbasins. Showers and WC are shared facilities. The first night in all budget self-drives with Iceland Travel include a accommodation with private facilities in the town of Hveragerdi.

Superior self-drive holiday

Upgrade your comfort car rental holiday to the best possible accommodation with premium amenities, either for the full duration of your stay or only selected nights. The upgrade can either be to a superior room in a comfort hotel, or a standard room in an upscale hotel.
The cost for a superior upgrade is 84 EUR per room per night (on prices in comfort category).

Late Arrival Supplement for passengers arriving late evening/night. Stay at Airport Hotel Smari at Keflavik International Airport for your pre night instead of Hveragerdi Area. Supplement per room per night is 48 EUR in Category Comfort and 63 EUR on prices in Economy and Budget.
