Day 1: Arrival

Approximate distance: ca100km / 62miles

Arrival in Iceland

On your own, transfer to Reykjavik.  We recommend the easy and convenient FlyBus Plus transfers, which can be booked through Iceland Travel.  If your flight lands early in the day, a great suggestion is to explore Reykjavík, the largest municipality in Iceland.

Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavík stands today. The town got its name “Smokey Bay” after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area and made such a deep impression on the first settlers.

Dinner is on your own.  Reykjavik offers a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses, making dinner a great way to get better acquainted with Iceland's capital.

Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price.  Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).

Overnight stay in Reykjavík (airport transfer not included). Dinner is on own.

Overnight in Reykjavik.

The destination is Heimaey Island, the largest of the Westmans and the only inhabited one.  Visit the island´s  Storhofdi Point with its fantastic views over the area.  During mid-May through the beginning of August it is also possible to see puffins hereTake a walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only three decades ago.  Visit Eldheimar Museum and explore the flora growing in the new lava field. Afternoon at leisure to explore the island on your own.

Overnight in the Westman Islands.  Dinner on own.

Day 3: South Shore - Skogar – Vik

Powerful Volcanoes – Folk Museum – Black sand beaches

Breakfast at your hotel.  Take the ferry back from the Westman Islands and travel further on along the south shore.  Pass numerous glacial rivers en route to Skogafoss waterfall. A famous folk museum is nearby, showcasing the buildings and daily life of Icelanders in the past centuries.  Next travel to Thorvaldseyri Farm located at the foot of the world famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano that last erupted in the spring of 2010. A visitor's centre/family-run exhibit tells the story of the eruption with a 20 minute film and displays about the spectacular natural disaster Continue on to the black sands of Reynisfjara beach.  Here you can witness the powerful waves and amazing basalt Colum features carved by the power of the sea.

Dinner and overnight stay in Vik area for the next 2 nights.

Skaftafell and Glacial beauty – Europe‘s largest Glacier – Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs

Head onwards to Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland's most outstanding areas of natural beauty. Continue to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to see floating icebergs and maybe a curious seal or two. A boat trip takes you on a sail between the floating ice bergs.  Throughout the day, enjoy magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier.

Travel onwards to Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. The next stop is Thingvellir National Park, where the Viking-age parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. This is also where you can see the meeting point where the European and North American tectonic plates meet.  After some time to explore Thingvellir, head back to Reykjavik.

I have travelled all over the world and been on many tours and Steingrimur, your guide for the Volcanoes and Glaciers Tours, was one of the best guides I have ever had.

Karen T. (Canada)

Our guide Ingi (sorry if that's not the right spelling!) was very knowledgeable and was great at throwing in extra info during the bus rides. I really appreciate the side trip to a church historical site while the majority of the group went to a horse show. That really showed how much Iceland travel and their guides care about their groups having a great time and filling all of it with interesting bits.

Herman (our driver) was also great and even contacted some friends so that our group could see some pufflings up close and personal. What a great guy! He didn't have to do that, but he did and it made our trip even more memorable.

Thanks for an amazing time. I'll definitely be recommending this one to my friends.

Anna G. (USA)

We were on the Volcanoes and Glaciers trip between 9th and 14th September 2012. Our tour guide Ingi and the driver Herman were brilliant. They really made the trip special. They both went out of their way to let us see and experience as much as possible. Ingi had amazing knowledge about the country and was fascinating. Herman did a sterling job, particularly given the high winds he had to contend with.

We really enjoyed the content of the trip as well and felt that it was extremely varied and crammed a lot into the time. We would definitely use your firm again and look forward to coming back to Iceland again very soon.

We did the 4 days Volcanoes and Glaciers tour in May, visiting the south of Iceland. An excellent introduction to the spectacular scenery Iceland has to offer. It was a well paced tour, with plenty of time spent enjoying the sites we visited, focusing on all the major attractions, with a fabulous visit to the Westman Islands. We thought the weather was fine, even when it rained at the Blue Lagoon, it didn't spoil the experience. All the hotels were so clean, the staff were really helpful and the food served was excellent. We had a marvellous guide Val and driver Ragnar, who looked after us really well. I can't wait to go back and visit another part of the island.

Sarah S. (UK)

My husband and I recently returned from the Volcanoes and Glaciers tour. We loved it. The scenery was fabulous, and we did not tire of taking it all in. We are active people, and we enjoyed the activity involved with the tour, whether it was climbing up hills beside glaciers, climbing up steps to get close to waterfalls, or walking on the black beaches. We had a wonderful tour guide who told us so much about the country, its history, culture, economy, entertainment, etc. that I feel like I have actually lived there. We were treated well everywhere we went, and everything (except the airplanes) ran on time! We hope to return some day.

VOLCANOES AND GLACIERS 7-12 June 2015 Excellent holiday and a wonderful introduction to Iceland. Guide Ole so knowledgeable, friendly and interesting. Driver Peter brilliant, we always felt completely confident. Hotels well chosen - comfortable and food good. Only suggestion is that coach could have been a bit more luxurious.

Peta R., UK

We have just travelled on your Volcanoes and Glaciers tour, and thought that it was really superb. The itinerary, the bus, the hotels, and the food were all very good. Most of all we liked travelling with the guide, Oli, who was exceptional - very informative and humorous and helpful to everyone. Thank you for providing us with such a good experience.

Karen W., Canada

I just returned from your Volcanoes and Glaciers Tour and it was awesome. Our guide Steinunn was delightful and very well versed in everything Icelandic. I enjoyed the sagas, the history and of course all the natural beauty and interesting geology of the area. My 16 year old granddaughter and I came home with a great appreciation of your country. Also the hotel stays and included meals were excellent. Thank you, B. Stober
