Day 1: Arrival

Please note:   If you have added extra nights in Reykjavík before your tour, the guide will meet your group for the start of the tour on Day 2 according to the standard “Classical Iceland” itinerary.

Arrival in Iceland.

On your own, transfer to Reykjavik.  We recommend the easy and convenient FlyBus Plus transfers, which can be booked through Iceland Travel.  If your flight lands early in the day, a great suggestion is to explore Reykjavík, the largest municipality in Iceland.

Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavík stands today. The town got its name “Smoky Bay” after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area and made such a deep impression on the first settlers.

Dinner is on your own.  Reykjavik offers a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses, making dinner a great way to get better acquainted with Iceland's capital.

Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price.  Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).

Overnight stay in Reykjavík (airport transfer not included).  Dinner on own.

Day 2: Thingvellir – Geysir – Gullfoss – Hveragerdi

National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – Exploding Geysers – Massive Waterfall – Geothermal Village

Breakfast at your hotel.  From Reykjavík, head via Nesjavellir to Thingvellir National Park for an exploration of the ancient parliament site, Alþingi, on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. Here you can see the effects of dramatic continental drift between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates.  Travel on to Gullfoss (the "Golden Falls") and the nearby Geysir hot spring area to see the famous spouting hot springs, along with numerous steam vents and boiling mud pools. The tour continues to Hveragerði, often called "the flower village" because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs.

Dinner and overnight stay in the Hveragerdi area.

Day 3: Skogar – Dyrholaey – Vik – Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Thundering Waterfalls – Puffin Colony – Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore – Lava Fields

Breakfast at your hotel. Continue along the south shore, stopping to admire the spectacular Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. Move onwards to Dyrholaey* nature reserve with its rich birdlife - including, amongst others, the puffins (puffins generally in Iceland between mid-May and early August). Continue your journey to the charming village of Vik, with its black sand beaches and further across Eldhraun, spectacular lava fields formed after the most massive eruption in Iceland in history (AD 1783). Later on, your group will reach the small town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur, a former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent.  The tour continues over Skeidararsandur sands to Skaftafell National Park, a green oasis with various hiking possibilities.

Dinner and overnight stay in Skaftafell area.

*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season in spring, approximately mid-May through mid June.

Day 4: Skaftafell National Park – Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon – Hofn - Egilsstadir

Europe's Largest National Park – Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs – Europe's Largest Glacier

Breakfast at your hotel.  From Skaftafell, continue to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to see the floating icebergs and possibly some curious seals. Throughout the day enjoy magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajokull Glacier.  Continue to the eastern part of Iceland via Djupivogur, a village with a long history of trading and fishing, and, finally, arrive in Egillstadir town via Breiddalsvik.

Dinner and overnight stay in the Egilsstadir area.

Day 5: Egilsstadir – Dettifoss – Lake Myvatn – Akureyri

Highland Desert – Europe's Most Powerful Waterfall – Bizarre Lava Formations – Geothermal & Volcanic Activity – Rich Birdlife

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today explore the empty vastness of the highland desert plateau Modrudalsoraefi as you head to the Lake Myvatn area. Stop at the impressive Dettifoss waterfall and then drive onwards to the Namaskard pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colors.  Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Myvatn area, including the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo craters at Skutustadir, and the Laxa Salmon River. One of Myvatn area's claims to fame is that it is home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse birdlife in general. Finally, travel onwards to the bustling northern port of Akureyri, making a stop at the magnificent Godafoss waterfall on the way.

Overnight stay in the Akureyri area.  Dinner on own.
