Northern Lights Special - Lake Myvatn

On a 5 day winter short break, visit Lake Myvatn's famous moonlike volcanic craters, ash cones, lava fields and boiling mud pits. The lake's surroundings offer an incredible variety of landscapes and geological formations.
Opportunities for winter adventure abound in a host of optional activities to suit your mood.
The evenings heat up with excitement, as this area just south of the Arctic Circle is a prime location for hunting for the northern lights.

Day 1: Arrival

Once you have landed at Keflavik Airport in Iceland, please pick up your luggage and head through customs. Transfer on own to Reykjavik and check-in at your hotel in Reykjavik city.  Transfers are not included in your package, but we would be happy to arrange an arrival transfer for you, perhaps even with a stop at the popular Blue Lagoon.  

The day is yours to rest and use at your own leisure. 

Overnight in Reykjavik.


Day 2: Wonders of Lake Myvatn area

Reykjavik - Akureyri - Lake Myvatn

Breakfast at your hotel. On your own, transfer to Reykjavik Domestic Airport (cabs plentiful). Morning flight to Akureyri, the Capital of the North.

You´ll be met and transferred to your hotel in the Lake Myvatn area. During your drive to the hotel you’ll get a short sightseeing tour of the Lake Myvatn area, renowned for its beauty and geological wonders. The northern lights might dance around tonight, so be sure to take a walk before going to sleep!

Day 3: Day at your leisure

Lake Myvatn

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today you can enjoy various optional leisure activities in the area. The Myvatn area has been gaining a reputation for its winter fun, including the possibility to enjoy activities on the frozen lake.  Some tour ideas might include cross country skiing, snowmobiling, winter tours to Dettifoss Waterfall and even winter horseback riding.  

It is ideal to end the evening with a tour to the Myvatn Nature Baths for late night relaxation in the geothermal lagoon.  And, with luck, the northern lights will make an appearance!

Day 4: Akureyri, the Capital of the North

Akureyri - Reykjavik

Breakfast at hotel. You´ll be transferred to Akureyri. Visit the town of Akureyri, North Iceland's trade and cultural center, beautifully resting in a scenic fjord.

Flight back to Reykjavik. On your own, transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik. Overnight in Reykjavik.




Day 5: Departure

If your departure flight is in the afternoon, you might want to visit one of the numerous museums or art galleries scattered around the city. Perhaps you´ll stroll along the seaside paths, breathing in the pristine North Atlantic air. We recommend departing your hotel no later than three hours before your light.

On your own, transfer to Keflavik airport for international flight. Transfer not included, but we would be happy to arrange it for you. We can also assist you with extending your trip with hotel nights and tour add-ons.

Budget self-drive holiday

By selecting a budget self-drive holiday you'll lower your costs considerably as you'll be staying in accommodation with shared facilities.
These are a combination of basic hotels, farmhouses and guesthouses. All rooms have made-up beds and some rooms have washbasins. Showers and WC are shared facilities. The first night in all budget self-drives with Iceland Travel include a accommodation with private facilities in the town of Hveragerdi.

Late Arrival Supplement for passengers arriving late evening/night. Stay at Airport Hotel Smari at Keflavik International Airport for your pre night instead of Hveragerdi Area. Supplement per room per night is 48 EUR in Category Comfort and 63 EUR on prices in Economy and Budget.

This is not a complaint. I am just wishing something can be changed during the trip. My friend and I did not see the Northern Lights which the reason why we book the package. The Aurora forecast can only be more accurate two or three days to predict the Northern Lights activities. When we in Reykjavik, there is Northern Lights in Akureyri. When we are in Akureyri, there is Northern Lights in Reykjavik. Therefore we miss it all together. By flying very far and not see the Northern Lights, I am very sad.

Outside of that, Icelandic people are nice, helpful, tourist friendly, ready to assist us when we visiting the town. We did purchase other day tours while we were there. If we did see the Northern Lights, the trip would be completed.

The trip was great, had a blast. The weather was bad in Akureyri the first day and the flights were canceled so we only got to spend one day there, wished we had more time, it is a nice little town, but no complaints.
