DAY 1: Arrival

Approximate distance: ca100km / 62miles

Geothermal Lagoon – Flower village – Geothermal Greenhouses

Pick up the car at the airport and start your Iceland experience.

From Keflavik International Airport we recommend driving the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula towards your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerdi. The village is one of the few sites in the world located directly in the middle of a geothermal area and because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs it is often called the 'flower village'.

Depending on your arrival time in Iceland it is ideal to visit the renowned Blue Lagoon and relax in the geothermal water.

DAY 2: Gullfoss – Geysir – Thingvellir – Borgarfjordur

Approximate distance: ca290km / 180miles

Exploding Geysers – National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO) – Massive Waterfall

The celebrated natural wonders along the 'Golden Circle' route are an absolute  “must“ for nature and history lovers alike. Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO) provides a visually stunning lesson in plate tectonics and is a historical treasure as the site of the world's oldest parliament. Nearby is the soothing Fontana Nature Spa,  where you have the option to relax in the natural steam baths and geothermal waters near Lake Laugarvatn.

A drive along scenic Hvalfjörður (Whale) Fjord reveals Bjarteyjarsandur, a working horse and sheep farm where you may might stop to meet the locals or even participate in fun farm activities. Driving further into West Iceland brings you to Borgarnes town,  known from the beloved Egill´s Saga Og on a voyage of discovery at the Settlement Center, which tells the story of the first Viking settlers to Iceland, many who settled in this very area.

Overnight in West Iceland

DAY 3: Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Approximate distance: ca230km / 140miles

Sea Cliffs with Birdlife – Curious Rock Formations – Quaint Fishing Villages – Viking history

Explore the countless natural phenomena of Snaefellsjokull National Park from pebbled beaches to wonderful hiking at Arnarstapi sea cliffs with incredible birdlife and even a Singing Cave. The beach near the farm of Ytri Tunga is famous for colonies of curious seals known to climb up on the rocks and is well worth a visit. The crowing glory is the glacial volcano, Snaefellsjokull, said to have magical healing powers. It also inspired authors from Jules Verne to Halldor Laxnes.

This area is also rich in local history and folklore. Gudridur Thorbjarnardottir, one of the first Viking settlers in North America, and the most widely traveled woman of her time, grew up here. There are also sites connected with Bardar Snaefellsas, the half troll guardian spirit who lives on Snaefellsjokull Mountain.

Many visitors to this area like to visit the Shark Museum at Bjarnarhofn for a courageous taste of 'rotten' shark meat, a local delicacy, and a fascinating lesson on shark fishing.  Another unique place to visit is the Freezer Hostel in Rif, where you can watch one-man theatre performances in English. Several performances focus  on area legends, culture  and folklore.

Overnight in West Iceland

DAY 4: Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Laugar Saelingsdalur

Approximate distance: ca110km / 70miles

Coastal Route - Viking Heritage – Birthplace of Leif Eiriksson - Icelandic Farm Life

Begin the day by exploring Stykkisholmur with its beautifully preserved town center, before driving the scenic route towards Budardalur village. At the nearby Erpsstadir dairy farm you can stop for an introduction to Icelandic farm life, pet the bunnies and taste the freshly made ice cream.

If you continue to Eiriksstadir, you'll see the Viking Age home and turf-covered replica longhouse of Erik the Red and birthplace of his son Leif Eiriksson, two of the most celebrated Vikings in the world.

In this area there is also the option to take a lovely ferry ride across Breidarfjordur Bay and discover the incredible birdlife, jaw-dropping seascapes and playful seals among the 3,000 tiny islands dotting the glistening waters.

Overnight in West Iceland.

DAY 5: Borgarfjörður – Reykholt – Hvalfjörður – Reykjavík

Approximate distance: ca290km / 180miles

Picturesque Waterfalls – Europe's Most Powerful Hot Spring

A drive through Borgarfjordur reveals a region proud of its legacy as the setting for most of the Icelandic Sagas. The landscape, nature and culture reflect this heritage and bringing history to life. In Reykholt you'll actually  walk in the footsteps of Snorri Sturluson, the famed Saga poet, author and chieftain.

Head on further, visiting two adjacent waterfalls, each with very different characteristics. At Hraunfoss (Lava Falls) the water seems to magically appear from the moss covered lava rocks and shiver down into the rushing turquoise blue waters below  Barnafoss (Children's Falls) resembles a pale blue milkshake of short, fierce rapids that cut through a narrow canyon.

Nearby is Europe's most powerful hot spring, Deildatunguhver, where visitors can buy organic tomatoes grown using geothermal heat in the nearby greenhouses.

On your way back,  we recommend a short detour to Háafell farm, a one of the few farms in Iceland to protect the Icelandic goat breed, a  rare heritage breed. You can play your part in the protection and “adopt“ one of their goats for a one year support or longer.

Arrive in Reykjavik later in the day.  Overnight in Reykajvik.

Day 6: Departure

Approximate distance: ca52km / 32miles

Drive back to Keflavik International Airport and even stop at Blue Lagoon as it is on your way to the airport, if you did not have time to do it on you arrival day.*

*Please note that the package price is based on 5 x 24-hour rental days starting at the time of rental. If your flight arrives early on day 1 and departs late on day 6  an additional supplement will be necessary unless you choose to return the car in Reykjavik when the 5 day rental is up and use our Flybus Plus departure transfer.
