Iceland’s Westfjords – A Hikers Paradise

Walk through an abandoned settlement in the Hornstrandir Nature reserve, sail across glittering fjords, hike along red sand beaches, admire spectacular waterfalls and enjoy Europe’s largest bird cliffs. You will also encounter friendly folklore, sample local delicacies and soak your cares away in hidden hot springs surrounded by stunning scenery.

Day 1: Arrival

Approximate distance: ca52km / 33miles

Meet and greet at Keflavík airport. Drive to Reykjavík for check-in at your accommodation.

Overnight stay in Reykjavik. Dinner is on your own. Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price.  Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).  


Day 2: Reykjavík – Borgarfjörður – Stykkishólmur – Flókalundur

Approximate distance: ca340km / 212miles

Unique Waterfalls – Europe’s Most Powerful Hot Spring – Ferry Ride among 3,000 Islands

Breakfast at your hotel.  Drive along the scenic coastline of Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord), one of the longest and deepest fjords in Iceland. In West Iceland, explore Hraunfossar (Lava Falls) and Barnafoss (Children’s Falls) known for their beauty and unusual natural phenomena.

View Deildartunguhver hot spring, which bubbles out of algae covered boulders at a steamy 97°C (200°F).

In the afternoon, arrive at Stykkisholmur village and take a lovely ferry ride across the spectacular seascape of Breidafjörður Bay, dotted with 3,000 tiny islands. Encircled by mountains and the Snæfellsjökull volcano, this dramatic bay is home to 50 bird species, including the rare white-tailed eagle, as well as gray seals lounging on the islets.

 Dinner and overnight stay in Flókalundur area.


Day 3: Rauðasandur – Látrabjarg - Breiðavík/Patreksfjörður

Approximate distance: ca179km / 112miles

Red Sand Beaches – Stunning Bird Cliffs – Europe´s Westernmost Point

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today you’ll discover unique sights in one of the least-visited places in Iceland. Take a stroll along Rauðasandur beach, which shifts in colour from golden to orange and red depending on the daylight. In a setting of black cliffs, Rauðasandur cradles a large lagoon where curious seals and Arctic skuas are regular visitors. Afterwards,  your group will peruse unusual treasures at a quirky folklore museum in Hnjótur.

Continue your journey, arriving at Látrabjarg, Europe’s largest bird cliff and westernmost point.  Here you will encounter an amazing wildlife spectacle as the stunning cliffs shelter a mind-boggling number of sea birds. Protected from Arctic foxes, the birds are fearless and provie plenty of close-up photo opportunities.  You may even spot some playful puffins (best seen mid May to August).

Dinner and overnight stay in the Breiðavik/Patreksfjörður area.


Day 4: Bíldudalur – Ísafjörður

Approximate distance: ca179km / 112miles

Capital of the Westfjords – Thundering Waterfall – Outdoor Nature Spa

Breakfast at your hotel.  Travel along the winding coastline of magnificent fjords, heading towards the colourful fishing village of Ísafjörður where you will spend the next two nights. As the honorary capital of the Westfjords, Ísafjörður boasts a lovely old town centre with beautifully-restored timber buildings, a thriving harbour, and stylish cafes.

En route,  you will have the opportunity to take a dip in an outdoor thermal hot spring with gorgeous vistas before stopping at the spectacular Dynjandi Waterfall (The Thunderer).  Dynjandi is actually a collection of seven cascades resembling a tiered wedding cake. Continue towards Hrafnseyri, birthplace of Iceland’s first president, Jón  Sigurðsson, where we enjoy some Icelandic specialities.

Dinner and overnight stay in Ísafjörður area for the next two nights.

Optional Activities:  Visit the intriguing Icelandic Sea Monster museum in Bíldudalir.  Iceland’s folklore is rich with acccounts of strange beasts, and quite a few were sighted in the Westfjords.  This museum recounts these tales in a surreal setting of waves and cliffs.  


Day 5: Ísafjörður – Hesteyri

Fjord Sailing – Abandoned Settlement – Remote Nature Reserve

Breakfast at  your hotel.  The morning is yours to enjoy the atmosphere of Isafjordur.  A suggestion is to visit the Maritime Museum (Westfjords Heritage Museum), located in a beautifully-restored 18th century building. 

An early afternoon boat ride takes you across Ísafjarðardjúp, the largest fjord in the Westfjords,  where steep mountains plunge into the ocean. Step ashore onto  one of Europe’s most remote corners for a full-day in breathtakingly lush greenery.

Situated on a picturesque sandy beach, Hesteyri is an ancient abandoned settlement where the elusive Arctic Fox roams among colourful wildflowers. On your evening sail home enjoy epic views of Drangjökull glacier.


Day 6: Hólmavík – Laugar Sælingsdal

Approximate distance: ca290km / 181miles

Arctic Fox Centre – Saga Folklore – Thermal Bathing

Breakfast at your hotel.  Start the day with a visit to the Arctic Fox Centre in Súðavík. From Ísafjörður town the route provides coastal views of scenic fjords that were cut into the earth by Ice Age glaciers.  En route to Hólmavík village,  stop to enjoy a local favorite: freshly baked waffles in a quaint café.

The  journey continues through green valleys to Laugar in Sælingsdalur, an area rich in ancient Saga folklore and Medieval history. Here you can soak outside in one of the many thermal pools hidden in nature.

Dinner and overnight stay in the Sælingsdalur area.

Group Optional Activity:  Visit the Museum of Icelandic Sorcrey and Witchcraft.  Here you can learn about the traditions of sorcery in Iceland 


Day 7: Búðardalur – Borgarfjörður – Reykjavík

Approximate distance: ca175km / 109miles

Birthplace of Leifur Eiriksson - Volcano Hike - Dairy Farm Delights

Breakfast at your hotel.  Drive along Iceland’s West Coast to the restored Viking Age house at Eiríksstaðir. This wasthe original home of Erik the Red and the birthplace of his son Leifur Eiríksson , who discovered North America. In a turf-covered longhouse, meet modern day Vikings who will demonstrate the daily life of 1,000 years ago.

Make a tasty stop at the local Erpsstaðir dairy for an introduction to Icelandic farming life and a sample of freshly-made ice cream. In Borgarfjöröur,  take an easy hike up the 3,500 year-old Grábrók volcano crater with incredible views over Hreðavatn lake and beautiful moss-covered lava fields.

Return to Reykjavik in the late afternoon.

Overnight stay in Reykjavik.  Dinner is on your own.
