Experience a friendly maritime culture, beautiful harbor surroundings and great access to astonishing natural surroundings with a visit to Husavik fishing village
Experience a friendly maritime culture, beautiful harbor surroundings and great access to astonishing natural surroundings on an adventurous break to the small fishing village of Husavik.
Husavik, a fishing village of just over 2,230 residents, is a thriving center for the surrounding region. Surrounded by majestic snow-tipped mountains in a picturesque fjord, this charming village has gained an international reputation for excellent whale watching, which can be enjoyed for much of the year. Husavik is an ideal base to explore the breathtaking circle of natural wonders known as the Diamond Circle, including the marvellous volcanic wonderland of Lake Myvatn, the thundering waterfalls of Dettifoss, the horseshoe shaped Asbyrgi Canyon and the echoing crags of Hljodaklettar.
The beauty of the region comes alive in the winter months when the snow and light conditions bring out mystical shapes, and of course the mysterious northern lights which are best seen on cold and clear nights. Popular outdoor winter activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Winter temperatures can also be quite mild considering Husavik's proximity to the Arctic Circle (average temperatures around -2.75°F or 26°F), making it especially enjoyable to enjoy some geothermal bathing on a winter day at either the local swimming pool or the Nature Baths in Lake Myvatn.
Husavik is a small town offering much to do year-round with friendly restaurants featuring local produce, a geothermal swimming pool, hiking paths, and outdoor fun. For local culture there are several museums, including the famous Whale Museum -- Iceland's only museum of marine mammals-- and the new Explorers' Museum.
