Waterfalls, hot springs and northern lights! Stay in Iceland for up to seven days with hotel and one day tour included
Stopover in Iceland and explore West Iceland's nature and history
Iceland is one of the most convenient stopovers when crossing the Atlantic. Why not break up your long journey across the pond, get off the plane to stretch your legs and allow the kids to run around a bit?
The Family Stopover Adventure gives you just that, and a lot more! Go swimming in geothermal pools, taste shark, spot seals, pet goats, hunt for trolls, and get to know the spectacular Icelandic nature. Taking you through the region of Borgarfjordur, onward along the shoreline of Snaefellsnes and finally through the Viking lands of Dalir back to Reykjavik, this holiday is full of history, lava and hidden treasures.
Like all of our family holidays, the Family Stopover Adventure is designed to educate your young travelers, energize the older ones, and of course; create memories that will last for years to come.
Must be 21 years of age to rent a car, 23 years of age to rent car cat. 5.0 or higher.
*Please note that the package price is based on 3 x 24-hour rental days starting at the time of rental. If your flight arrives early on day 1 and departs late on day four an additional supplement will be necessary unless you choose to return the car in Reykjavik when the 3 day rental is up and use our flybus departure transfer.
Day 1: Arrival
Welcome to Keflavik, Iceland. Pick up your rental car from the airport and make your way to your accommodation in the small village of Borgarnes, visiting sights such as Deildartunguhver hot spring, and Barnafossar waterfalls on the way. A stop at Haafell goat farm, in Hvitarsida valley, is an absolute must for those wanting an authentic experience and a chance to meet the friendly Icelandic goats. The farm itself is also a Cinderella story of sorts, having been saved from foreclosure by crowdsourcing on the internet.
Note that if your arrival flight is late in the afternoon, it's also possible to drive this portion of the itinerary when driving back to Reykjavik on day three.
Overnight stay at the friendly and comfortable, Borgarnes B&B
Day 2: Time for tangible adventures
Start your day with a visit to the Settlement Center, standing in one of the oldest buildings in Borgarnes. The center houses two permanent exhibitions: one telling the Saga of The Settlement of Iceland and the other of Iceland´s most famous Viking and poet Egill Skallagrimsson.
After a historical start to the day it's time to trace the road around the remote Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Among interesting stops along the way you'll find the legendary Bardur Snaefellsas rock statue in Arnarstapi, Djupalonssandur, Vatnshellir Cave, and Bjarnarhofn Museum.
Overnight in Hotel Stykkisholmur.
Day 3: Viking Fun
Embrace your inner viking during a boat tour around the islands of Breidafjordur Bay in the morning, where you will get the chance to taste seafood as fresh as it gets - right from the sea! Spend the afternoon finding your way back to Reykjavik through the region of Dalir, which allows you to stop for some more Viking action at Eiriksstadir farm, the birthplace of "Leif the Lucky" who was the first European to set foot in Americ. Stop en route to taste some home made ice cream at Erpsstadir dairyfarm.
Overnight at Hotel Natura in Reykjavik.
Day 4: Bless, Bless
It's time for your onwards flight. There are several interesting sights on your way to Keflavik Airport. We highly recommend a relaxing dip in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon.
We hope you've enjoyed taking the time to explore the hidden secrets of West Iceland.
Get to Know the Family-Friendly Reykjavik
Add an extra day to explore Reykjavik´s numerous cultural, leisure, and sporting facilities, many of which have sections and activities especially designed for kids. The resident ducks, geese and swans at Tjornin Pond are always popular among the youngest kids, while the older ones might like to experience more of the Viking times at one of the capital's many museums. The Reykjavík Family Park & Zoo in Laugardalur Valley is perfect for kids of all ages.
