Journey into the Glacier - City Break

After nearly five years of studying, planning, and modelling by top engineers, world-renowned geophysicists and glacier specialists, the Into the Glacier experience opened in June 2015. Located high up on Langjokull, Iceland‘s second largest glacier, the Into the Glacier experience enables travellers to enter into the heart of a glacier and view an ice cap from the inside.  The focus is on educating people about glaciers, along with a touch of classic adventure via an exciting glacier vehicle ride up the slopes of Langjokull.

This adventurous city break includes three nights in the rich culture and exciting nightlife of Iceland's capital city, Reykjavik. You'll join a day tour taking you right to the heart of Langjokull glacier, around the countryside of Borgarfjorðdur and across Kaldidalur highland track** to Thingvellir National Park, experiencing waterfalls, hot springs, and lava plains on the way.

You'll also have a whole free day, perfect for exploring Reykjavik or adding a day tour such as the South Shore Adventure, where you can explore black sandy beaches, beautiful waterfalls and more glaciers.

Highlights:

  • Witness the stunning blue ice found at the heart of Langjokull Glacier
  • Traverse across the incredible landscape of an ice cap glacier
  • See a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of a lava field

Day 1: Arrival

Welcome to Iceland

If you arrive early, you might have time for a half-day or evening excursion, so study our tour selection and book ahead. Check in at your hotel in Reykjavik City and get comfortable for your three-night stay in Iceland.

Day 2: A journey into the glacier

Explore the exciting ice tunnel in Langjokull Glacier

Breakfast at your hotel. Today's adventure starts with a drive through Borgarfjordur, a beloved nature resort area of Icelanders, to the edge of Langjokull glacier. During the drive you'll get the chance to visit Hraunfossar waterfalls, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres (2,950 feet) out of a lava field. Nearby are the mightily churning hot springs of Deildartunguhver, considered the most powerful in Europe.  They provide much of the hot water and geothermal energy to the area communities.

Head via unpaved tracks into the starkly beautiful highland interior of Iceland, crowned by the Langjokull glacier.  When you reach the glacier, it's time to board an 8-wheel glacier truck that will take you on an incredible journey to the entrance of the ice tunnel.

When you enter into the tunnels of the ice cave on a guided walk, you´ll enter an amazing world of blue ice and amazing crystal beauty.  You'll see colours of blue you never knew existed, and learn how glaciers hide the secrets of history.

After an approximately 50-minute visit inside the glacier, it's time to head back to Reykjavik.  If you are traveling between June and September, you´ll take the Kaldidalur highland track, including a stop at UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, where you'll encounter places of historic significance and incredible natural scenery.

Overnight in Reykjavik.
