The focus of this tour is on the locations mentioned in Hannah Kent‘s chilling historical novel Burial Rites. The novel imagines the final days of Agnes Magnusdottir, a young woman who was the last person executed in Iceland on 12 January, 1830. The novel has received international acclaim for its historical detail and ability to draw readers into the setting of 19th-century rural Iceland. A film based on the book is also in production.

This package includes a full-day guided excursion to Vatnsnes Peninsula in North Iceland, where most of the events that inspired the novel took place. Vatnsnes is a hauntingly-beautiful area where the land, sea and sky seem to merge. In addition to historical locations that inspired Burial Rites, Vatnsnes is home to interesting natural wonders and historical events from the Viking Age.

In addition to Vatnsnes, you'll have the chance to explore Akureyri, a town with many historical and cultural attributes, as well as the history-rich capital of Reykjavik.

Highlights:

• Visit the hauntingly beautiful Vatnsnes Peninsula
• Immerse yourself in the historical locations that inspired Hannah Kent’s novel Burial Rites
• Visit a natural fortress used during Viking times
• Learn about how North Icelandic farmers lived during the early 19th century
• Stay in Akureyri, a town with many interesting historical sites
