Explore the majestic mountains, deserted villages, and unique wildlife of Iceland's Westfjords.
Duration: 8 days/7 nights
Visit the town of Ilulissat in West Greenland, the gateway to a magnificent ice fjord, an ideal setting for a boat trip between glaciers.
The easy access to Greenland directly from Iceland makes it a great destination to combine with Iceland. As a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Ilulissat Icefjord is probably the most popular tourist destination in Greenland. The town of Ilulissat is beautifully situated at the mouth of this fjord filled with enormous icebergs formed by the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, Sermeq Kujalleq. About 4,000 people live in Ilulissat and around 6,000 sled dogs. This is an eloquent statement of the importance of the dogsled as a means of transport, even in a large modern town. (Dogsledding is done during the winter months).
Experience the glacial beauty of this area with walking tours and a boat tour. You will also have some time to discover Reykjavik, Iceland at the beginning and end of your trip.
This tour can also be combined with the Volcanoes and Glaciers tour in Iceland for a perfect way to experience two incredible North Atlantic destinations.
Witness and discover the marvels of Mother Nature in its purest form!

Day 1: Arrival
Arrival in Iceland.
On your own, transfer to Reykjavik. We recommend the easy and convenient FlyBus Plus transfers, which can be booked through Iceland Travel. If your flight lands early in the day, a great suggestion is to explore Reykjavík, the largest municipality in Iceland.
Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavík stands today. The town got its name “Smokey Bay” after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area and made such a deep impression on the first settlers.
Dinner is on your own. Reykjavik offers a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses, making dinner a great way to get better acquainted with Iceland's capital.
Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price. Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).
Overnight stay in Reykjavík (airport transfer not included). Dinner is on own.
Day 2: Ilulissat, a UNESCO heritage site
Breakfast at your hotel. Assisted transfer to Reykjavik domestic airport in the morning and flight to Greenland. Arrive around noon to the picturesque town of Ilulissat. It has a beautiful location at the mouth of a long Icefjord, filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere.
A guide from Greenland will welcome you at the airport and take you to the hotel. After check-in at the hotel, you will get a short introduction to your tours in Greenland and optional activities you might book. Afterwards you will enjoy approx. 2 hours walking tour in the centre of the town with a local guide and learn about modern life close to the Arctic Circle. Return back at the hotel for a welcome dinner.
Day 3: Eqi Glacier
Breakfast at your hotel. Today you get a pick up in the morning for a full day tour to the Eqi glacier (sail is 6-12 hours, depending on the boat used). Very few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi glacier, thrusting out in a fjord north of Ilulissat. Sail to the very edge of the glacier’s frontline rising 80-90 meters (262 to 296 feet) above the surface of the ocean. Enjoy lunch on board, surrounded by majestic ice bergs. Through the cruise, watch big chunks of heavy ice break off the glacier and tremble intensely into the water. The sight and sound of icebergs shattering is impressive. Afterwards you will be driven back to the hotel.
Dinner is on your own.
Day 4: Old Settlements
In the morning, hike to the remains of the old settlement Sermermiut, situated by the Ice-fjord. Listen to stories about life and customs of the Greenlanders before the arrival of Europeans while enjoying incredible views of the icebergs. The hike is about 2 hours, easy level.
The afternoon is open for your own activities, such as visiting local museums. Numerous optional excursions are also available (booked and paid in Greenland).
Farewell dinner at the hotel.
Optional (at extra cost):
Boat tour viewing the icebergs
Helicopter flight across the ice-fjord
Day 5: Travel Day
The morning is free for own explorations. Enjoy the vistas of beautiful icebergs in the fjord or complete any final shopping for tupilaks other handicraft souvenirs. Transfer to the airport in Ilulissat and flight to Reykjavik, followed by a transfer to your hotel.
Overnight stay in Reykjavík. Dinner is on your own.
Day 6: Departure
Transfer to the airport not included. We would be happy to book it for you. We recommend departing your hotel no later than 3 hours before your international flight.
If you did not visit the Blue Lagoon on your arrival day, you might use the opportunity to stop there now on your way to the airport.
