Discover the arctic charm and natural beauty of Husavik and northeast Iceland. Experience a friendly maritime culture, beautiful harbour surroundings and great access to astonishing natural surroundings on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

The proximity of the wonders of Lake Myvatn, with hot springs, geothermal mud pools, craters and extensive lava fields makes Husavik the perfect gateway for visitors to witness the beauty of the region.  Other nearby gems of nature include the Arctic coastline of the Tjornes peninsula leading towards Jokulsargljufur, one of the deepest and most breath-taking canyons in Iceland, and Dettifoss, the powerful waterfall, considered to be Europe´s mightiest.

No domestic flights on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day,  New Year's Day and Easter Sunday.

  • 2 nights at selected hotel in Husavik, including breakfast
  • Return flight Reykjavik- Husavik (including airport tax)

Day 1: Flight to Husavik

On your own, transfer to the Eagle Air terminal at Reykjavik airport for your flight to Husavik (terminal is located behind the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura).  After a 55-minute flight, you will arrive in Husavik!  We suggest booking an add-on tour that will meet you at the airport (based on the 8:55 am arrival in Husavik) and drop you off at your hotel afterwards.  Suggestions are below.

Overnight stay in Husavik for the next 2 nights.

Husavik, a fishing village of just over 2,230 residents, is a thriving centre for the surrounding region. Surrounded by majestic snow-tipped mountains in a picturesque fjord, Husavik has gained an international reputation for excellent whale watching, and it is an ideal base to explore the breath-taking route of natural wonders known as the Diamond Circle.

There are many ways you can relax in Husavik. Walk along the colorful harbor seafront and breathe the fresh Atlantic breeze. Visit the charming wooden church that is the town's symbol. Enjoy a dip in the geothermal swimming pool and chat with the locals. Visit the new Exploration Museum, which commemorates the role Iceland has played in international – and outer space – exploration. Discover the Husavik Culture House with its maritime museum, natural history museum, folk museum, district archives and an art gallery.  Walk along a rare beach known for its ancient sea fossils, most which are over 3 million years old!

The Husavik Whale Museum is an absolute must-see. It provides information on whale species, their evolution and biology, as well as the history of whaling in Iceland.

Day 2: Day at your leisure in Husavik – Optional Tours available

Day tours can bring you to the surreal beauty of the Lake Myvatn region, with its combination of volcanic features and birdlife (the best time for bird watching is mid-May through June).  Take a stunning natural wonder tour around Tjornes Peninsula and into the wilderness to view Dettifoss Waterfall and mythical Asbyrgi Canyon.  View the Arctic Henge, a stone solar calendar that is gradually being built near the Arctic Circle.  It was inspired by Old Norse beliefs and legends.

If you enjoy outdoor adventure, Husavik offers some of Iceland‘s best whale watching in traditional oak boats or as RIB safaris.  You can also enjoy bicycling in Lake Myvatn, hiking up Husavik Mountain or taking a horseback ride on the seacoast.

Wintertime:  The beauty of the region comes alive in the winter months, when the snow and light conditions bring out mystical shapes, as well as the mysterious northern lights, which are best seen on cold and clear nights. Popular outdoor winter activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Winter temperatures can also be quite mild considering Husavik's proximity to the Arctic Circle (average temperatures around -2.75°F or 26°F), making it especially enjoyable to enjoy some geothermal bathing on a winter day at either the local swimming pool or the Nature Baths in Lake Myvatn.
