Day 2: Goðafoss Waterfall - Ancient & Modern Culture – Northern Lights

Flight to Húsavik - Goðafoss, waterfall of the Gods – Grenjaðarstaðir folk museum - Greenhouse and evening Northern Lights Hunt.

Breakfast at hotel.  Morning free for your own activities in Reykjavík.

 

In the afternoon, assisted transfer to Reykjavik Domestic for your domestic flight to Húsavík.

 

Upon arrival in Húsavík meet your English-speaking guide and begin your journey through incredible North Iceland with an impressive visit to Goðafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), where glacial water flows among the surrounding lava. Continue to the turf houses of Grenjaðarstaðir Folk Museum and get a taste of the “olden days.” Learn how Icelanders in the 1900s survived the harsh northern climate before visiting a modern-day greenhouse where geothermal heating is utilised to grow all varieties of fruits and vegetables just below the Arctic Circle.

 

Tonight enjoy a Northern Lights Hunt on foot with your guide in and around the town. The Arctic Circle is a prime location for viewing the elusive Northern Lights. During the evening, take a short break and visit Safnahús Museum of Húsavík featuring a polar bear and maritime exhibits.

Day 3: Mývatn area - Pseudo-craters - Dettifoss Waterfall - Outdoor Nature Spa

Breakfast at hotel.  Ahead is a fully-packed day of wildly-varying landscapes.  Travel to the unforgettable Lake Mývatn area, a geological wonderland that includes the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo-craters at Skútustaðir and Laxá Salmon River. Some of the most bizarre attractions in the region are the mud pits and vibrant colors of Hverarönd geothermal area.   With an amazing landscape where peaceful white snow accentuates black lava fields in magical artistry, the Myvatn region has become a favorite filming location for major motion pictures like Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, Prometheus directed by  Ridley Scott and, most recently, the action film Fast and Furious 8.   The popular HBO Game of Thrones series was also filmed here.

 

The journey continues to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, located in awe-inspiring Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Em route, you’ll glimpse the interior wilderness highlands.

Before returning to Húsavík, visit the Myvatn Nature Baths and enjoy some relaxation outdoors in a completely natural geothermal lake cradled in mystical lava scenery.

Day 4: Húsavík City Sightseeing – Whale Museum – Ásbyrgi Canyon

Approximate distance: ca142km / 88miles

Breakfast at hotel.  Húsavík is a cosy town on the edge of Arctic wilderness-- perfect for a handcrafted walking tour connecting you to local ambiance.  Walk along the colorful harbor,  visit an art gallery, and tour the Húsavík Whale Museum focusing on Icelandic whales,  as well as a number of real whale skeletons on display.

In the afternoon drive around the fossil-rich Tjörnes peninsula, and explore the remarkable horseshoe-shaped canyon at Ásbyrgi National Park,  which Vikings believed to be a hoof-print left by Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged flying horse from Norse mythology.

 

Drive to Húsavík Airport for an afternoon flight back to Reykjavik. Assisted transfer to hotel in Reykjavík.

 

Evening free for own activities. Overnight in Reykjavík.

 

Day 5: Departure
