We have put together a programme where you can try a little bit of everything.

About Torshavn

The capital of Torshavn is home to around 20,000 residents. Torshavn means ‘Thor's Harbor’, named after the god of thunder and lightning in Norse mythology. Founded in the 10th century, it is considered to be one of the oldest capitals in northern Europe. The city of Torshavn has fish-processing plants, a shipyard, and produces woolen products that add to the economy and of the town.

Day 1 Friday: Arrival to the Faroe Islands and the cozy capital of Torshavn

On your own, transfer to Reykjavik Domestic airport (cabs are plentiful).  Departure from Reykjavik Domestic airport to Vagar Airport on Suduroy Island. Transfer on your own to the capital city of Torshavn on Streymoy Island (public bus transport and taxis are available; the trip is about 45 minutes).

After checking into your accommodation, we suggest taking a walk around Torshavn. As you wander through the houses in the old town, you will discover a web of lanes and passageways, stairs, protruding rocks and tiny black-tarred houses with white windows and grass roofs. This old city is unique, not only in the Faroe Islands but in the whole world.  Later today, we suggest popping into one of the city’s cafés or bars, a great way to mingle and meet with the locals.

Overnight in Torshavn.

Day 2 Saturday: Shopping and Culture

Breakfast at your hotel.  The day is open for your own activities.  At the end of the Marina area is an exciting shop called Ostrøm where you can browse modern Faroese art and handicrafts. Next door is Steinprent, a lithographic workshop. Visit their gallery where they exhibit the latest works. Tutl is another interesting shop, a music label that records and sells music from Faroese artists, with a wide variety of music genres. Other great places to visit for shopping include Stadid, Soulmade, Silvursmið and Guðrun&Guðrun. You will also pass the homely old bookshop, which is most definitely worth a visit. If you get hungry, we can recommend the trendy sushi restaurant ETIKA that serves exceptional quality Faroese seafood in the classic Japanese style.

Need a break from shopping? We suggest a trip to the Nordic House, a Scandinavian cultural centre.  Also visit the Art Museum and Gallery and its wide range of Faroese art where you can see how nature and landscape plays a role in art. Tonight, we recommend booking dinner at Restaurant KOKS, Áarstova or Barbara Fish House.

Overnight in Torshavn

Day 3 Sunday: Faroe Islands Highlights

Breakfast at your hotel.  The day is open for your own activities.

We suggest renting a car and experiencing some of the different islands’ landscapes (not included in price).  You might drive to Vestmanna Island where you can take a boat trip to the Vestmanna Cliffs.  Drive on to Saksun, a picturesque village where the bay used to be a protected natural harbour, but today the entrance to the bay is blocked up with sand. It is possible to walk out to the sea at low tide. Drive over the bridge that connects Streymoy and Eysturoy via Eidi to Gjogv. This route will give you a view of Slaettaratindur Peak (882m /2.893 ft.) and the impressive sea rock formations known as the Giant and the Witch. Gjogv is known for its distinctive natural harbour and views of Kalsoy Island.  If you walk up the mountain slope from Gjogv, you can see bird cliffs and fantastic views.

Overnight in Torshavn.

Day 4 Monday: Departure flight back to Reykjavik

Breakfast at your hotel. Check out of accommodation and transfer on your own to Vagar airport for your return to Reykjavik.
