Inside the Volcano

Visit an Icelandic volcano from the inside!

Thrihnukagigur volcano lies in the Blafjoll mountains, just a 30 minutes drive from Reykjavik.

Once you reach the Blafjoll Mountains' cabin, you'll leave your transportation behind and begin an easy and very scenic hike through the lava fields to reach the opening of the crater (approx. 40 minutes).

At the base camp you will be divided into smaller groups of 4-5 people. This is the maximum number allowed on the open elevator that will take you inside the magma chamber of the dormant volcano. The descent is approx 120m/400ft long and takes approx 7-8 minutes. Once at the base, you will spend approximately 30 minutes on the ground in the magma chamber.

If you are a group of more than 5 people, don't worry, you can wait your turn while enjoying a tasty bowl of traditional Icelandic meat soup, as well as hot coffee/tea/chocolate, offered free of charge at the nearby base camp close to the crater's opening.

Duration: 5-6 hours (about 40-45 min inside the volcano).

Distance Walked: Approximately 3,0 km (2,0 miles) each way, walk for approx. 45-50 minutes. Guides will be with you at all times.  No knowledge of hiking or climbing is needed.

All equipment and processes have been tested extensively and approved by the administration of Occupational Safety and Health in Iceland.

Before accessing the open elevator, you must wear a helmet and the required harness, which will be provided on the spot. Several guides, all highly trained and experienced mountain guides and cave explores, will be with you at all times.

What to bring:

  • Outdoor clothing. A warm sweater and jacket are very useful. Temperature inside the crater is about 5–6°C (42–43°F).

Minimum age:

12 years

Our trip to Iceland was awesome. The people are very friendly and the beauty and wonders of nature are endless and one of a kind. The tours were all well organized and the guides were very friendly, helpful and informative. There were many highlights: going into a volcano, the geyser, lava caves, hot springs, whale watching, the Blue Lagoon, and many waterfalls. Highly recommend going to Iceland to anyone.
