Northern Lights - Frozen Night, Mystery and Magic (from Akureyri)

Starting from Akureyri, together we hunt for the Northern Lights. Named after the Roman goddess Aurora these colourful lights swirl around the sky in a dramatic dance. The old Icelandic folktale tells us about the angels dancing in heaven, their dresses were supposed to create these magnificent shapes of light in the sky.

Auroras seen near the magnetic pole may be high overhead, but from farther away, they illuminate the northern horizon as a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the sun were rising from an unusual direction. Discrete aurora often displays magnetic field lines or curtain-like structures and can change within seconds or glow unchanging for hours, most often in fluorescent green.

Sightings are not guaranteed even if the tour is operated. In that case a second tour is offered free of charge.

This was truly magical, the scenery was rugged and beautiful. There were six of us on the mini-bus plus our driver. While I do not recall his birth name, we called him Paul. He was really well versed in the culture both from a fishing and farming perspective. We had an opportunity to stop at the small hamlets along the fjord - truly beautiful. The Herring Museum was great and again, Paul provided great insight.

Thanks a lot for all your help!
