North Iceland boasts some of Iceland´s most beautiful natural treasures. These include Dettifoss, Europe´s most powerful waterfall; Lake Myvatn, renowned for its diverse geology and birdlife; Dimmuborgir, with its maze of stark lava formations; and the Nature Baths, a magnificent spa set in stunning scenery.
Leaving Akureyri, the first stop is at the beautiful waterfall, Godafoss. From there it´s on to Lake Mývatn. Set in the middle of an active volcanic zone, the surrounding landscape is full of delightful contrasts - from soft green pastures to amazing lava features that include pseudo craters, steam vents and bubbling mud pools. The lake´s rich birdlife make it a paradise for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
Next we head for Dettifoss waterfall, whose raging glacial waters thunder 44 meters into a ravine causing the ground to vibrate. Fittingly nicknamed The Beast, one is left awestruck by the sheer size and raw power of Europe´s most powerful waterfall. For film buffs, Dettifoss featured in the 2012 Ridley Scott Alien sequel Prometheus. Nearby is another waterfall that we also visit.
After all this outdoor activity it´s time to kick back and relax by bathing in the wonderfully soothing natural waters of the Myvatn Nature Baths. Please note that the entrance fee to the Nature Baths is not included in tour price. Renewed in mind and body, we finish our drive round the lake and head for home.
