Ammassalik is the largest town in East Greenland with about 2,017 residents. It lies just south of the Arctic Circle, boasting long hours of daylight in summer and the splendour of the Northern Lights in winter.

The town is beautifully situated in a protective fjord with high mountains on all sides. It is split in two by a river, which flows through the valley of flowers behind the town. This valley has a unique variety of Arctic flora, and is an ideal place for walks of all lengths.

Ammassalik is only a 10-minute helicopter ride from Kulusuk, but this short flight is one of the most scenic expeditions imaginable as you cross the ice-filled sea separating these two mountainous islands.

Sometimes Ammassalik (or Angmagssalik to use the old Greenland spelling) is called Tasiilaq.  The last one is the original East Greenlandic name for the town.

A note about travel to Greenland

Greenland offers a somewhat different type of travel experience than you might expect. Its remote location and island status means that virtually all items must be imported; hence, even everyday items cost more than they do even in Iceland or Denmark (which Greenland is a part of).

Also, accommodations tend to be small in size (again, because of high cost of importing building materials), and service often is more relaxed than you will find elsewhere.

Still, Greenland is a fascinating and breathtaking destination, and we’re confident that its amazing natural wonders will mitigate any minor inconveniences you may experience during your brief stay.

Day 1: Arrival in Ammassalik

Air Iceland flight from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Kulusuk (please note that you need to take care of your own transfer to the domestic airport, but it is easy to take a taxi).  The flight duration is about 2 hours and the time difference between Reykjavik and Kulusuk is 2 hours.

Enjoy a short 10 minute transfer to Ammassalik by helicopter. This helicopter ride is extremely scenic as you will be flying over the Ammassalik fjord from Kulusuk Island to the small town of Ammassalik which is also known as Tasiilaq.  Please be prepared for some waiting time in Kulusuk, as the helicopter can only hold a few people each time.

Transfer to Hotel Ammassalik for check-in.

The hotel offers twin bedded rooms with private facilities, shower, WC, TV, restaurant, bar, internet access (at a small cost), souvenir shop with fine local arts and crafts, currency exchange, as well as information service.

Upon arrival in Ammassalik you can choose from a number of exciting guided excursions.
