This trip brings you to Iceland at the ideal time to discover the nation’s birdlife at its best, with a focus on the south and west coasts.  Enjoy opportunities to spot birds, along with visits to Iceland’s beloved natural wonders.
The majority (about two-thirds) of Iceland’s birds are seabirds and various species of wetland birds. Almost 80 bird species breed regularly in Iceland. Many of these birds only spend a few months in the country each year; others are permanent residents. In total around 30 species have been added to Iceland’s bird population during the last century. The vast majority of the species breed in neighbouring European countries, or around the Arctic region. Three species have entered Iceland from North America:  the Great Northern Diver (Common Loon), the Barrow’s Goldeneye, and the Harlequin Duck. Iceland is their only breeding location in Europe. Several migratory species stop-over in Iceland on their way between their breeding grounds north of the Arctic Circle and their wintering grounds further south on the planet.  These species include the Knot, sanderling, Turnstone, Brent Goose, White-fronted Goose, and Barnacle Goose. A total of around 380 species have been observed at least once in Iceland, most of them being migratory.

Day 1

An Iceland Travel guide will meet you at the airport and bring you out to where the tour vehicle is waiting. Head over the lunar landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula as you drive to Reykjavík. Your guide will give you an introduction to your tour as you travel to your hotel.
Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price. Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).
Dinner is on your own tonight. Reykjavík’s tempting variety of restaurants and cuisines will make the dining experience a delight. (We can also add dinner on this night for your group, if requested.)

Day 2

Seashores and Marshes of South Iceland

The Reykjanes peninsula is an area of volcanic rock and lava, with numerous clefts and gorges. It lies on the margin of the Eurasian and North American plates and is directly connected to the mid-Atlantic ridge. Along the shore, low cliffs alternate with sandy beaches where ocean waves sweep unhindered onto the coast.
The low-lying, flat coast of south Iceland holds many brooks and ponds. Marshes and bogs alternate with cultivated land, while sandy beaches lie adjacent to the river estuaries that frame the area.
Drive from Reykjavík to the Garðskagi headland through several fishing villages (Sandgerði, Hafnir, Grindavík) and into the lowlands of south Iceland.  Your group will stop at the cliffs of Reykjanestá and the bird cliffs of Krísuvíkurbjarg, as well as the Flói sanctuary (Friðland í Flóa) and the seashore around the villages of Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri.

The Reykjanes Peninsula

Day 3

Dyrhólaey – Reynisfjara Beach – Vík village

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today, your group heads east through small villages and farmlands, driving towards the beautifully situated village of Vík. If the day is clear, you might get a glimpse of glaciers and volcanoes, including the notorious Mt. Hekla and the ice capped Eykjafjallajökull volcanoes.
Stop at the spectacular waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss and drive past Dyrhólaey*, Iceland’s southernmost point. Dyrhólaey is a magnificent rocky headland with sheer cliffs and a huge wave-cut gap in the side that faces the ocean.
Take a walk on the seashore, where steep bird cliffs tower above the black, wave-pounded sandy beach of Reynisfjara. Keep an eye out for guillemots, whose breeding area is on the distant Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Important: Dyrhólaey is closed to visitors during the nesting season (May – late June).

The South Shore

Day 4

Volcanic Island – Scenic Ferry Ride – Puffin Colony

Breakfast at your hotel.  Drive to Landshöfði pier and board the ferry to the Westman Islands. The ride is approximately 40 minutes, and your group is sure to enjoy the scenic views of the islands as you approach them.
The Westmans are rocky, steep-sided islands which were mostly formed by undersea volcanic eruptions. There are around twenty islands, as well as thirty rock pillars and skerries in the sea around the islands. The youngest island in this archipelago is Surtsey, which was formed by a volcanic eruption in 1963. About ten years later, a volcano erupted on Heimaey, the largest of the Westman islands.  Heimaey is the only settled island in the Westmans and one of Iceland’s most important fishing ports. The volcano’s lava covered parts of the town. Thankfully, there was no loss of life, and the town has been rebuilt.
When your group arrives at Heimaey, you’ll take a sightseeing trip around the island.  You’ll visit several sites, including the Eldfell volcanic crater and the puffin colony at Stórhöfði point. (The Westman Islands contains the world’s most populous puffin breeding ground, as well as the only breeding place of many shearwaters.)
After your island tour, your group will take the ferry back to the “mainland” and return to the hotel for the evening.

The Westman Islands

Day 5

Gullfoss – Geysir – Þingvellir National Park – Hvalfjörður Fjord

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today, you’ll visit the famous Golden Circle region on your way to Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Start with a scenic drive to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe.  Here you will see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down over double falls into a deep canyon. Only a few minutes’ drive from Gullfoss is the famous Great Geysir whose name has become an international term for an eruptive hot spring. One of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, shoots frequent hot spring plumes up to 25 meters (82 feet).
Drive along the Sog River to Þingvellir National Park, a remarkable geological  and historical site. The park’s Lake Þingvallavatn is the largest lake in Iceland and one of the deepest.
From Þingvellir,  your group will head into West Iceland via scenic Hvalfjörður bay and the fertile Mýrar region. The area is primarily meadow and moorland vegetation, along with marshland, along with rivers, streams, and small ponds. Low-growing shrubs grow in some places.
A final famous site you’ll drive past is the Eldborg crater, which lies at the edge of Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

The Golden Circle

Day 6

Lava Formations – Glacial Volcano – Bird Cliffs

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today your group will explore Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a unique area with a great variety of geological formations and colourful landscapes. On a single peninsula you can view lava fields, volcanoes, streams, ponds and waterfalls, yellow and black sand beaches, lava fields, and caves. The main attraction is without doubt the Snæfellsjökull, a glacier crowned volcano. Snæfellsjökull has become world-famous through the novel of the French author Jules Verne, Journey to the Centre of the Earth.  The area around the volcano is part of Snæfellsjökull National Park.
The lava and the coast around the old Búðir trading post has great opportunities for walks. Old trails lead through a moss-covered lava field and along bright-coloured sandy beaches that form a contrast to the black lava. Near the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar you can take unique hiking trails along a coastline known for bizarre rock formations. This area also has a huge bird population.
Continue on to the distinctive Þúfubjarg cliffs and Djúpalónssandur beach. You’ll drive through some charming fishing towns as you  circumnavigate the peninsula on your way back to the hotel.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Snæfellsjökull National Park

Day 7

Picturesque Village – Island-filled Bay – Scenic Boat Tour

Breakfast at your hotel.  Drive to Stykkishólmur, a picturesque fishing village on the north coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula. Here, your group will embark on a boat trip on the bay of Breiðafjörður. The bay contains thousands of islands and skerries and a vast number of seabirds, including puffins and other auks. Breiðafjörður is also Iceland’s principal breeding area for cormorants and shags. A few pairs of white-tailed eagles also breed in the area.
During your Breiðafjörður cruise, you can view birds at quite a close distance. In olden times, many of the islands were inhabited by farmers. Eider duck farming and seabird hunting were important activities for the locals.
After your boat tour, your group will drive through the Mýrar district and back to Reykjavík, arriving in the afternoon. Your guide will bid you farewell at your hotel.

Northern Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Reykjavík

Day 8

Breakfast at your hotel. (Please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight). Depending on your schedule there may be free time to explore Reykjavik, take a refreshing morning walk and do some shopping.
Meet your bus driver at your hotel for an unguided transfer to Keflavík Airport and your return flight. You’ll have the chance to take in some final views of Iceland as you drive along the Reykjanes Peninsula to the airport. Enjoy your trip back to your home country and the fond memories of your time in Iceland!
