Highlights
Husavik. Set along the eastern shore of Skjalfandi Bay, Husavik is a delightful town that has come into its own as a tourism destination in recent years. The plankton and fish-rich feeding ground of the surrounding waters have allowed the town to establish itself as the undisputed ‘Whale Watching Capital’ of Europe boasting astonishingly high success rates. Whales are often encountered within 20 minutes of leaving the harbor and include such magnificent species as the elusive humpback whale and the enormous blue whale.
Whale watching. Witness the gentle giants in their natural surroundings. Iceland is one of the best places in the world to go whale watching. Seeing these great mammals is truly an unforgettable experience. Around Iceland there are over 20 different species of whales, 8 of which are regularly seen on whale watching tours, e.g. the humpback whale, minke whale and orcas. They come to feed here and the conditions are good for them, i.e. around Iceland two currents mix, hot water and cold arctic waters, and the bays and fjords offer relatively shallow water. These combined make favorable feeding condition for the whales.
