Day 1

Meet your guide at Keflavík airport.
Welcome to Iceland! You will start your programme by driving directly to the Blue Lagoon, which is 100% powered by Iceland’s clean geothermal energy. Along the way, you will see fascinating new lava fields created by the recent Reykjanes Peninsula eruptions in Iceland (2021 – 2024). These surreal volcanic landscapes add a unique experience to your journey
Enjoy relaxing in the Blue Lagoon´s geothermal seawater, known for its positive effects on the skin. It’s a wonderful introduction to Iceland’s hot spring culture. After your refreshing Blue Lagoon experience, continue to Reykjavík and check in to your accommodation. The afternoon is open to rest and/or explore the world’s northernmost capital.
Please note that check-in for Icelandic accommodation starts between 14:00 (2:00pm) and 16:00 (4:00pm), and early check-in is not guaranteed.
Tonight, your group will enjoy a Welcome Dinner together at a nearby restaurant.

Before you visit the Blue Lagoon, begin your educational journey by learning about the Vikings who explored North America! Visit the nearby Víkingaheimar Museum (Viking World Museum) which is the home of the Viking ship Íslendingur (the Icelander). Built in 1996, Íslendingur is an exact replica of the famous Norwegian Gokstad longboat. In the year 2000, an Icelandic crew sailed Íslendingur from Iceland to Canada and then on to the USA to commemorate the thousand-year anniversary of Leifur Eiríksson’s voyage to North America. You can also enjoy the museum’s “Vikings of North Atlantic” exhibit created by the Smithsonian. If you like, we can also arrange for your group to enjoy a delicious Icelandic welcome breakfast in the museum’s café.

Arrival – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik (D)

Day 2

Enjoy a delicious and healthy breakfast at your accommodation before meeting your local guide for an interesting and educational day in Iceland’s capital.
Your guide will take you on a city sightseeing tour with a focus on the history of how Reykjavík developed geothermal heating. One important geothermal site is Laugardalur Valley (Hot Spring Valley). Until the 1930s, Reykjavík´s housewives would come here to use the hot spring water for laundering clothing. Reykjavík’s district heating started in 1930 by using hot water obtained from boreholes in the Laugardalur Valley. Your group will visit the location of these boreholes. You will also visit the geothermal swimming pool in Laugardalur.
Afterwards, your group will drive to the Grafarholt neighbourhood to view the hot water storage tanks there, as well as the pipelines that transport hot water from South Iceland’s Nesjavellir Power Station into Reykjavík. You will also see where Reykjavík´s first power plant was built in the city’s Elliðaárdalur river valley.
Next, visit the distinctive Perlan building that sits on top of former hot water storage tanks similar to the ones in Grafarholt. The water tanks now serve a completely different function: they are part of the interactive Wonders of Iceland exhibit. Here you can learn about Icelandic geology and nature in a fascinating way, including a visit to an ice cave created with actual glacier ice. You will also get an amazing view over Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains and coast from Perlan’s observation deck.
After your interesting city tour, you will visit one or two institutions or organisations affiliated with renewable energy. We will set up these visits based on your group’s interests and your college/university curriculum, as well as what local opportunities are available during the time of your visit. We will provide a more detailed description of the institutions/organisations during your tour confirmation process.
After these visits, your group will be dropped off in the city centre, where you can explore Reykjavík at your leisure. The city has a delightful variety of museums, galleries, attractions, and restaurants to enjoy. Transfer on your own back to your accommodation. Reykjavík has a good public bus network, and taxis are plentiful.

Reykjavík City Sightseeing with a Focus on Renewable Energy (B)

Day 3

After breakfast, you will be picked up by a coach and transferred to your first visit of the day.
Visit the deCODE Genetics Company,* which is headquartered in Reykjavik. deCODE is a global leader in analysing and understanding the human genome. A combination of factors provides unprecedented opportunities to uncover the genetic basis of virtually any disease or trait. An important reason for deCODE’s success is the generous participation of so many Icelanders in the discovery work. Other factors include comprehensive genetic and genealogical resources, the relative genetic and social homogeneity of the Icelandic population, and the country’s high-quality healthcare.
*Please note that the open lecture for groups is only available on Tuesdays.
Today, you will also visit another local institution/organisation whose representative will give you a lecture about the work of the organisation. We will set up this visit based on your group’s interests and your college/university curriculum, as well as what local opportunities are available during the time of your visit. We will provide a more detailed description of the institutions/organisations during your tour confirmation process.
After your visit, your group now heads to the city centre for a lunch break (approximately 1 hour). Lunch is not included, but there are plenty of dining options.
After your lunch break, your group will visit a local university for a brief introduction to their graduate programmes focusing on renewable energy. (This visit and experience takes approximately two hours).
At the end of the day, you will return to your accommodation. The rest of the day and evening is open for your own activities. We encourage you to try out the neighbourhood geothermal swimming pool, explore a museum, or relax in a café or restaurant.

Professional Visits in Reykjavik (B)

Day 4

Breakfast at your accommodation. Today, your group will discover fascinating geology and Icelandic history in the famous Golden Circle area.
Iceland is a country of enormous geological interest because it straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Your travel day begins at Þingvellir National Park where you can see the rift caused by the separation of these two tectonic plates. Your group will walk through the Almannagjá gorge to the site of Alþingi (now the world’s oldest parliament) that was established by Vikings in AD 930. You will have the opportunity to walk through a canyon to a picturesque waterfall (depending on trail conditions) and a beautiful rift in the lava filled with crystal clear groundwater.
After your geology and history walk in Þingvellir, you will drive to Nesjavellir where you can view a geothermal power plant and the surrounding area. Your group will not visit this plant, but you will have an opportunity to visit the Hellisheiði power plant later during your stay. For now, your group will continue alongside the Sog river and visit Ljósafoss hydro-electric power plant.
Your educational journey then takes you to Laugarvatn village, where you will visit a local geothermal bakery. You’ll learn how locals bake bread using the naturally heated ground. An area local will dig up a canister of rye bread that has baked for 24 hours in the ground. You’ll have a chance to taste the delicious warm bread, served with Icelandic butter and smoked trout.
Then it’s time to head onwards to one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls, Gullfoss (Golden Falls). The water that plunges into a deep canyon comes from Iceland’s second largest glacier. You will also visit the Geysir Geothermal Area teeming with hot springs, lively geysers, and bubbling pools of mud. The Great Geysir is Iceland’s largest geyser and has given its name to all other spouting hot springs in the world. Although Geysir is less active these days, nearby Strokkur spouts water and steam high into the air every few minutes.
During the afternoon you will visit Friðheimar, a family-owned greenhouse powered by geothermal and hydroelectric energy. Friðheimar provides an excellent example of how to harness renewable energy. You will have an introduction on how geothermal energy and the cultivation of tomatoes and cucumbers work perfectly together. You will also have the chance to sample some of the delicious tomatoes.
Return to the capital city, where the evening is open for your own activities.

Golden Circle Day Tour (B)

Day 5

After breakfast, a coach will meet your group and take you to the Iceland Ocean Cluster innovation centre in the heart of Reykjavík’s Old Harbour area. A representative will meet you and give an introduction about Iceland Ocean Cluster’s work: why they started, what benefits they provide, and how they operate. Additionally, the representative will give you a building tour, which focuses on several educational opportunities. Your group will learn about sailing vessels and what designers need to think about for boats to become more sustainable, limit oil usage and keep the ocean clean. You will also learn about the importance of efficiently utilising 100% of all cod fish caught, as well as see innovative examples of products made from different parts of the fish. You will learn how these products have increased the value of fisheries without increasing the fishing quota. And finally, you’ll learn about land-based seafood processing and new technology.
The representative will also tell you about the Icelandic fisheries policy, old trends, new markets, and new fish species. You’ll also see the current projects the Cluster’s entrepreneurs and start-up community are working on. The Iceland Ocean Cluster visit takes around 45-60 minutes.
This afternoon, a lecturer will meet your group at or near your accommodation for a talk on equality in Iceland. According to the World Economic Forum, Iceland is the most gender-equal country in the world and has been consecutively so since the year 2000. In fact, Iceland is the world’s only country to have closed more than 90% of its gender gap (91.2%).
The rest of the day is open for your own activities.

Professional Visits in Reykjavík (B)

Day 6

After an early start and breakfast, you will explore the South Shore, a beautiful region of volcanoes, glaciers, and seacoast.
If the skies are clear, you’ll have a view of two famous volcanoes. Beautiful Mt. Hekla is Iceland’s most frequently erupting volcano (last eruption in year 2000). Eyjafjallajökull is probably the most famous volcano in the world today; its 2010 eruption halted international air traffic.
Stop at Seljalandsfoss, a ribbon-shaped waterfall you can walk behind if trail conditions are just right. Drive along the hills surrounding Eyjafjallajökull, a beautiful setting with rich farmland. If you look carefully, you can see how the farmers have cleverly used the big volcano-tossed boulders on their farmland. Visit breathtaking Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls. Drive past the rocky Dyrhólaey headland with its sheer cliffs en route to Vík, a charming village famous for its volcanic black sand beaches. Take a walk on the beach, where you can get a view of the Reynisdrangar rocks &#8211; 66 metres (215 feet) above sea level. Dinner and overnight in South Iceland.
Today, you’ll also enjoy a glacier hike, an educational adventure that has been a popular option for past participants on geology study tours. Led by an experienced glacier guide, you will learn how to hike on a glacier using special gear. The guide will then take you up onto the glacier and point out glacial features. You will learn how glaciers are formed and why they are important for our planet. This glacier hike is easy and suitable for beginners who are in reasonable physical shape.

South Shore – Glacier Hike (B)

Day 7

After breakfast, you will be picked up by your local guide and driver. Today will be a great day to learn about geothermal energy and volcanic geology.
Start with a scenic drive to Hellisheiði Power Station, located on the Hengill active volcanic ridge. Here you will get a general introduction on how geothermal energy is processed from hot water. Iceland is the only Western country that produces all its electricity from sustainable natural resources such as geothermal and hydro-electric power.
A representative from Hellisheiði will take you on a private guided tour through the plant, which also includes various multi-media presentations. Afterwards, you will head to Hellisheiði’s conference room for a special in-depth lecture about Carbfix. Trees and vegetation are not the only natural materials that bind carbon from the atmosphere. Did you know that quantities of carbon are also naturally stored in rocks? “Carbfix” stands for “Carbon Fixation.” The process was developed to help nature re-balance the carbon cycle by imitating and accelerating the storage of CO2 in favourable rock formations. Afterwards, your group will make several in-depth site visits related to Carbfix.
The total programme at Hellisheiði Power Plant takes between 1 and 1.5 hours and consists of the following activities.
-Enjoy a tour of the Hellisheiði exhibition with an emphasis on Carbfix and The ON Geothermal Park
-Attend a lecture about Carbfix
-Your group will then watch a security video and put on protective helmets and vests
-The group, along with the guide, drives to the Carbfix reinjection well for an in-depth explanation of the process, as well as a look at and explanation of The ON Geothermal Park that includes Orca and VAXA
-Your group returns to the Hellisheiði exhibition for a final Q &amp; A.

After Hellisheiði Power Plant, you will continue to Hveragerði, “the greenhouse town.” Take a short driving tour of the area and learn about this town that was hit by an earthquake in 2008 (6,3 on Richter Scale). In the middle of the town, there is a geothermal area that was created after the earthquake took place. Your group will have the opportunity to stop at the shopping centre in Hveragerði (which has pictures from the earthquake) and get some lunch on your own.
After your lunch break, head to Raufarhólshellir lava cave. Enjoy will an easy guided walk inside this 2.000-year-old lava tube. It’s a unique way to see a volcano from the inside out. This educational cave is also very beautiful with its colourful walls and lava formations.
If the roads are passable (please note that not all roads are cleared during the winter), continue to the Reykjanes Peninsula, and visit the Krýsuvík geothermal area with its bubbling mud pools and the moon-like surroundings of Lake Kleifarvatn.
In the late afternoon, return to your accommodation in Reykjavík. Tonight, your group will enjoy a farewell dinner together at a nearby restaurant.

Hellisheiði Power Plant and Raufarhólshellir Lava Cave (B/D)

Day 8

Breakfast at your hotel. (Please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight.) Meet your coach driver for an unguided transfer to Keflavík Airport for your return flight. You’ll have the chance to take in some final views of Iceland as you drive to the airport. Enjoy your trip back to your home country!
