Small-group Tour to Magical Northeast Iceland
The Arctic Circle coastline of Northeast Iceland is spectacular, yet it has a surprisingly mild winter temperature. Stay in Húsavík, a friendly town surrounded by snow-tipped mountains in a picturesque fjord. Húsavík is known for its GeoSea seawater spa and its cosy charm. It’s a great base to explore Ásbyrgi Canyon, volcanic Lake Mývatn and more. You&#8217;ll be in an excellent area to view northern lights on a boat or bus tour. You can also enjoy excellent winter whale watching (October &#8211; November, March &#8211; April).

Day 1

A representative of Iceland Travel will meet you at the airport and bring you out to where the tour vehicle is waiting. Head over the lunar landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula as you head to Reykjavík. The representative will give you a quick briefing to the tour as you travel to your hotel .
Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price. Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).
Dinner is on your own tonight. Reykjavík’s tempting variety of restaurants and cuisines will make the dining experience a delight, (We can also add in dinner on this night for your group, if requested).

Welcome to the Land of Fire and Ice!

Flight to Húsavík – Goðafoss waterfall – Folk Museum – Greenhouse visit and Northern Lights Hunt
Breakfast at your hotel. We’ve left the morning free for your own activities in Reykjavík. There are plenty of great museums, shops, and cafés to make it a fun experience in Iceland’s capital. We can also suggest adding in a guided walking tour of Reykjavik to catch the town’s creative and historical vibes.
In the afternoon, a representative of Iceland Travel will meet you at your accommodation for an assisted coach transfer to Reykjavík Domestic airport for your flight to Húsavík, where you’ll be greeted by a local guide. This charming fishing village is a great base to explore many of the wonders located along the new Arctic Coast Way scenic byway.
Your Húsavík based guide will be waiting for you at the Húsavík airport. Board a tour vehicle and begin your journey through incredible North Iceland. Start with an impressive visit to Goðafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), where glacial water flows among the surrounding lava. These falls are one of our favourites at Iceland Travel, and their name reflects a Viking age legend.
It’s time for some history with a visit to the turf houses of Grenjaðarstaðir Folk Museum. Long ago, most of us Icelanders lived in turf houses, and it’s a special experience visiting one. You’ll enjoy a sample of some refreshments from the olden days and learn from a local how Icelanders in the early 1900s survived the harsh northern climate.
Head to Húsavík to check into your accommodation. Your group will enjoy dinner at one of the friendly restaurants where freshly caught seafood is a local specialty. Tonight (weather dependent) join your guide for a northern lights hunt on foot in and around the town. The Arctic Circle region is a prime location for viewing the elusive auroras. During the evening, you’ll visit the quirky Safnahús Museum of Húsavík, an award-winning “Museum of Museums” with interesting displays about life near the Arctic Circle. (Note: Northern lights are subject to weather conditions and best seen between October and mid-April.)

Day 3

Active geothermal area –  Europe&#8217;s most powerful waterfall – Geothermal spa
Breakfast at your hotel. Today we’ve planned a day full of wildly varying landscapes. Don’t be surprised if you feel like you are in a movie: the areas you’ll visit have been featured in popular science fiction, fantasy and action movies. Travel through a landscape of mountains and salmon rivers to the unforgettable Lake Mývatn area, a geological wonderland. You’ll visit the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo-craters at Skútustaðir and Laxá Salmon River. You’ll probably feel like you are on the surface of Mars when your guide takes you to the mud pits and vibrant  colours of Hverarönd geothermal area. Towering over the region is Krafla, the volcano responsible for the fascinating geological features. The Mývatn region has become a favorite filming location for major motion pictures like Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, Prometheus directed by Ridley Scott, and the action film Fast and Furious 8. The popular HBO Game of Thrones series was also filmed here.
Your journey continues into the surreal desert-like highlands to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, located in awe-inspiring Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The thundering water and deep canyon are an impressive view you’ll never forget.
On the way back into Húsavík you’ll stop for a relaxing visit to the Mývatn Nature Baths where you can relax in the azure blue geothermal waters and try the natural steam baths.

Day 4

Day 5

Breakfast at your hotel (please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight). Depending on your schedule there may be free time to explore Reykjavik, take a refreshing morning walk and do some shopping.
Meet your bus driver at your hotel for a transfer to Keflavík Airport and your return flight. Your guide will share some final insights of Iceland as you drive along the Reykjanes Peninsula to the airport. Enjoy your trip back to your home country and the fond memories.
