This historical tour brings you from Reykjavik to Heimaey, an isle in the Westman Islands archipelago. Domestic flight included. Perfect for history buffs.
Departing from Reykjavik domestic airport (entrance beside Hotel Reykjavik Natura), we take a 20-minute flight to Westman Islands.
You’ll be taken on a 2 hour guided coach tour of the island, where you will witness a volcanic crater, still-warm lava and half-buried houses from the island’s infamous 1973 volcanic eruption.
You’ll be transported to town where you have free time to explore or take part in the optional boat tour.
You will spot some of the most interesting features of the island, where nature has sculpted a fascinating landscape teeming with diverse bird and animal life, including the world’s largest puffin colony.
After exploring the island for almost a day you will enjoy another short flight back to Reykjavik in the afternoon.
Optional boat tour around the island
The boat circles the island of Heimaey, stopping at places of interest where passengers can see various caves, witness the bird life, and even spot whales or dolphins with a bit of luck.
The trip ends by sailing into Klettshellir (Cliff Cave). A musical instrument is played to showcase the cave’s stunning acoustics, creating a sensational experience. From there we re-enter the harbour.
The boat trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and is available only in summer.
