The lovely southeastern town of Hofn (also known as Hofn-in-Hornafjordur) is dominated by Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajokull, which towers over this region and has immensely affected the landscape. In 2008, the wilderness around the glacier became Vatnajökull National Park. Covering 14% of Iceland, Vatnajokull is the largest national park in Western Europe.
Höfn is within driving distance of some of the National Park´s southern area, including some of its most beloved natural wonders. The mystical Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon has immense floating icebergs that have broken off from the descending glacier tongue of Breidamerkurjokull. During the summer and early fall boat rides are offered in the Glacial Lagoon, but it can be enjoyed year-round for its views of blue-tinted ice bergs and lounging seals. The park’s Skaftafell area is a perfect blend of fire and ice with its many volcanic mountains ringed by glaciers. Here you can enjoy a variety of hiking trails, including one that leads to the basalt columns of Svartifoss Waterfall.
Adventure activities abound in Southeast Iceland such as ATV riding, snowmobiling, horseback riding, glacier hiking and ice climbing. Ingolfshofdi cape is excellent for seabird watching, and southeast Iceland is also one of the few places in Iceland where you might see wild reindeer roaming the countryside, especially during the wintertime.
Hofn’s main industry is fishing and it is known as the ‘Lobster Capital of Northern Europe.’ Fresh langoustine lobster is on restaurant menus and is highly recommended. The town also has a cultural centre, art museum, local handcraft shop and other services, including the Hornhusid Yoga Studio, which offers early morning yoga sessions in English for visitors.
