Icelandic Lava Show in Reykjavík

Grindavík, once a thriving fishing village, now stands as a stark reminder of nature’s unstoppable power. Recently evacuated due to volcanic activity, the town has become mostly uninhabitable, bearing the scars of recent eruptions.
This tour takes you deep into the heart of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you’ll witness the dramatic collision between human resilience and the raw, untamable forces of nature. Explore the aftermath of the volcanic eruptions and see firsthand how Grindavík has been transformed by these powerful events.
Your carbon-neutral journey begins with a scenic drive through volcanic landscapes and along rugged coastlines. Your first stop is Seltún geothermal Area, where you can marvel at bubbling mud pools and steaming vents, showcasing nature&#8217;s raw power.
Next, you’ll head to Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Iceland’s youngest volcano. The 45-minute hike will take you across still-warm lava fields to a viewpoint overlooking the fresh lava from recent eruptions. The total hike is about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) with a moderate elevation gain, suitable for anyone in good physical condition.
After exploring the lava fields, you’ll visit the coastal village of Grindavík, where you’ll witness how the town’s brave residents quickly constructed protective barriers during the eruptions to shield it from lava flows. You’ll also learn about the dramatic rifts created by tectonic shifts, forever altering the landscape and the lives of those who once called this place home.
There will be a meal stop so you can purchase food before we head back to Reykjavík. We recommend trying the traditional fish and chips, made from locally-caught seafood — a perfect way to end a day full of memories from Grindavík and the volcanic landscapes of Reykjanes.

Before taking off, our Icelandic storyteller will welcome you into an ancient Viking longhouse. Join him by the light of the fire as he weaves a tale while a mesmerising shadow-play projection brings it all to life.
THE WELL OF TIME
Here, in the Well of Time, you’ll journey on an immersive exploration through Iceland’s history. Using music, video, imagery and sound, the forces of nature and the human spirit come to life. Your guide is Sú Vitra (The Wise One), a character based on local troll legends that has been custom designed by beloved Icelandic illustrator Brian Pilkington. Older than human imagination can fathom, she symbolises the wisdom and enchantment of Iceland. Sú Vitra leads you through three different acts. First, you’ll feel the power of the land as the strong and often violent forces of nature take shape. Next is the arrival of man and the introduction of “Þetta Reddast.&#8221; Finally, you’ll discover how Icelandic people have made a life on this island. Life continues, no matter what.
