In the Westfjords, land meets sea in the most dramatic way imaginable, with sheer mountains rising from the sea and deep fjords dotted with tiny fishing villages.

Isafjordur is the Gateway to the Secret Westfjords. This short-break is an awesome way to explore and enjoy the best the Westfjords have to offer.

The remote Westfjords are a distinct region in Iceland that differs from the rest of the country both historically and geologically, with rock formations up to 14 million years old. In the Westfjords, land meets sea in the most dramatic terms imaginable, with sheer mountains rising from the sea and deep fjords dotted with tiny fishing villages.

Isafjordur, the main town, is a scene for plenty of social and cultural activities, with a good number of cool cafes, a thriving harbour, a Culture Centre and an annual alternative music festival (Aldrei For Eg Sudur).  The town has some of Iceland‘s oldest standing buildings, lovingly maintained to keep their original beauty.

Since the days of settlement, the inhabitants have lived their lives somewhat isolated from the outside world, creating an independent and endearing local culture.

Abandoned farmsteads have become protected nature reserves with a beauty and diversity of wildlife unknown elsewhere in Iceland.  Hornstrandir Nature Reserve on the region´s northern edge is not only breath-taking in its rawness but also offers hiking trails and the chance to view Arctic foxes.
