Kerlingarfjöll is an adventure seeker’s paradise perfect for snowmobiling and skiing (cross country/backcountry) – or simply relaxing and enjoying the spectacular scenery. Winter

Kerlingarfjöll Deluxe Winter Highland Adventure

Short breaks

Day 1

Board the vehicle for your transfer at Reykjavík Bus Terminal and head out of town. Enjoy the peaceful winter landscapes of southern Iceland as you travel to the Skjól Basecamp where you’ll transfer to a specially equipped wilderness SuperJeep. The highland mountain roads are not serviced during the winter, so SuperJeeps are the only way to travel! A SuperJeep (also known as a Super Truck) is a standard truck/SUV or van that has been modified for driving in wilderness conditions. This 4X4 vehicle has exceptionally large tyres and is ideal for travelling the rugged Icelandic terrain in all seasons.
Now it’s time to drive into the wilderness as you leave paved roads for the historical Kjölur highland track. The trip may be bumpy, but that is part of the fun! Your specially equipped vehicle and expert driver will take you skilfully through the rocky terrain. The landscape is so surreal you might think you are on another planet!
Your tour vehicle will turn off the Kjölur trail and follow another mountain track to Kerlingarfjöll, a remote mountain range near Hofsjökull glacier. The opportunity to drive across vivid rhyolite hills and into the towering mountains is an unforgettable adventure. Kerlingarfjöll is an extreme paradise of steaming geothermal valleys, glacial rivers, perennial snow fields, and panoramic vistas. The mixture of snow and brilliantly coloured slopes is a photographer’s dream.
You’ll stay at the Kerlingarfjöll Highland Base. Rooms are comfortable and cosy with private facilities and Wi-Fi. Of course, the best part of your accommodation is the spectacular natural scenery outside your window. Amenities at the Highland Base include outdoor geothermal pools and an Alpine-style restaurant offering bistro cuisine. The remote mountain location is ideal for northern lights if Mother Nature decides to cooperate.

Note: The wilderness transfer takes approximately 4-6 hours based on weather and travel conditions.

Into the Highlands

Day 2

Breakfast at your hotel. Today is open for you to enjoy outdoor activities in the surroundings. Depending on weather conditions, activities might include snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, or cross-country skiing. (These activities are available for an additional price).
If outdoor adventure is not your preference, you’ll find Kerlingarfjöll ideal for relaxation and recharging your spirit in the majestic serenity of geothermal mountains and glistening glaciers.
No matter how you choose to spend your time, a dip into the natural geothermal pools just outside the hotel always adds an enchanting element to your day. You might also enjoy the evening northern lights and stargazing activities on offer. Dinner is on your own, and the restaurant offers tasty options to suit all tastes.

Kerlingarfjöll Mountain Wilderness

Day 3

Breakfast at your hotel. It’s time to say farewell to the winter mountain paradise. Savour the final views of the wilderness as your vehicle heads south through the highlands. The tour ends at the Reykjavík Bus Terminal.
Note: We do not recommend departing from Iceland on the same day as your transfer from the Kerlingarfjöll Highland Base to Reykjavík. The travel time is unpredictable and can take longer than anticipated. Instead, we recommend overnighting in Reykjavík, and we’re happy to arrange the accommodation for you.
