Extend your visit by adding this package on to an existing Iceland Travel package or book as an individual package! The Highlands and the Fjords tour offers a great way to explore the eastern part of Iceland.

The East is home to Iceland‘s only reindeer herd, and local legends tell of hidden elves and mysterious monsters. The friendly town of Egilsstadir is the gateway to a region gaining a reputation for its excellent local cuisine and quality “slow travel“ appeal.

The East Fjords are one of the oldest regions in Iceland, shaped by glaciers during the Ice Age. Although many are uninhabited, each fjord has its own grandeur. The natural harbours in the fjords led to the development of pretty fishing villages that have maintained a sense of Old World charm.

The easy access to the Northeastern highlands, the National Park of Vatnajokull glacier and the freestanding Snaefell volcano, makes Egilsstadir a unique destination.  Unlike many other towns and villages in Iceland, Egilsstadir and its neighbouring areas are characterized by a beautiful green belt of trees and woods. With reforestation programs and agriculture high on the list of priorities, the area is packed with enjoyable forest walks and trails into nearby mountain ranges.

Day 1: Flight to Egilsstadir

Highlights: Egilsstadir

On your own, transfer to Reykjavik domestic airport for your flight to Egilsstaðir (10 minutes taxi drive from most hotels). After a 60-minute flight, you are in the beautiful east!  We suggest booking an add-on tour (or transfer) that will meet you at the airport (based on 8.30 am morning arrival in Egilsstaðir) and drop you off at your hotel after the tour. Suggestions are below.

Overnight stay in Egilsstaðir for the next 2 nights.

Egilsstaðir serves as the central hub with the regional airport.  The area around Egilsstaðir is gaining a name for itself as an excellent food culture destination, and many day tours involve meeting locals and taking part in their daily life.  Hallormsstadaskogur is an impressive forest in a country otherwise almost barren of trees. Beyond that lies the eastern highland wilderness with heaths, mountains and wild rivers.  This is the home of Iceland’s only wild reindeer population.

Day 2: Day at your leisure in Egilsstadir – Optional Tours available

Local folklore is filled with legends of hidden people, elves and ghosts.  There are several interesting cultural spots in the region worth visiting, including the new Wilderness Centre, the Wartime Museum, and Petra’s Mineral Collection. East Iceland enjoys some of the sunniest weather in the country, and visitors enjoy spending time hiking, horseback riding, sea angling and enjoying boat tours.

Day tours can introduce you to the magnificent highland wilderness and the new interactive Wilderness Centre, or to the charming fishing villages of the East Fjords.  You also have unique opportunities to have dinner with local residents and chat about their daily life.  Outdoor adventures can include hiking on the excellent trails of Borgarfjordur Eystri or taking a horseback ride to an abandoned wilderness farm.
