Take the plane wreck shuttle and explore the famous Douglas DC-3 Airplane that crashed on the black sands of Sólheimasandur in November 1973.
Discover an important piece of Icelandic history on the black sands beach of Solheimasandur: a DC-3 airplane wreck. The plane wreck has become popular both with photographers and history buffs.
The Plane Wreck Shuttle service takes you 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the DC-3 wreckage in less than 15 minutes. Enjoy the harsh but beautiful landscape around the Airplane Wreck and the black sand beach close by before we pick you up again. Relax in the comfy shuttle as we transport you back to your vehicle. The Plane Wreck Shuttle follows a 30minute schedule every day from 10:00am, all year round as long as conditions allow.

Day Tours

Dive into this 2-hour exploration of Iceland’s black sand landscape in the south. You’ll also visit the famous DC3 airplane wreck.
This tour kicks off after you meet your ATV guide at the ATV base near Mýrdalsjökull glacier. You will receive all the necessary gear and a short safety briefing before venturing out  on ATVs to drive on Iceland’s iconic black beaches. Your guide will lead your group to the stunning coastline to witness breathtaking views of the surrounding area. You’ll marvel at the views of Dyrhólaey, a peninsula that is the southernmost tip of the country, and the marvelous Mýrdalsjökull glacier in the distance.
After leaving the beach, your group will head to the famous Sólheimasandur plane wreck. This relic has been resting in the sand since 1973. After this, you will drive to the Jökulsá river and up the foot of the mountain. This action-packed tour ends at the base.
